Bill Polian talks about Dave Gettleman

From tweets by Joe Person...

Bill Polian, who hired Panthers GM Dave Gettleman as a scout in Buffalo, said Gettleman's always been a terrific talent evaluator.

Joe Person @josephperson 50m

"He's been through this drill many times before. He will not panic. He will not be swayed by outside noise," -- Polian on Dave Gettleman.

Person doesn't say where these quotes are coming from but you can infer from another tweet that they're from a pre-draft conference call.  He also says Polian is high on UNC QB Bryn Renner.

Worth remembering that it was Polian who gave Gettleman his first NFL job (with the Bills).  He's said before of Gettleman that he was the type to spend hours locked in his office just watching tape, trying to find the right players.

I'd guess that Person will probably do a writeup on this later.

Lmao why the hell would I trust the opinion of a measly 6 time former NFL executive of the year over the one of Aceboogie who has over 1,000 posts on an internet message board? Gettleman is just a walking clogged artery hired solely to physically absorb Cam into his fat cells we all know this.

That's exactly why I'm not worried (not that I was worried when Hurney was GM either).  With one draft G-man has proven that he knows what he's doing with these college kids.  As for FA and dealing with team chemistry, I will reserve judgement at least for another year.  I like what I am seeing for the most part though.

Gettleman is putting the pieces in place with the strain of our salary cap. If our record isn't what it should be I won't be blaming him or our players because I trust what he is doing (he has earned that so far).  I'm going to start pointing fingers at the Offensive Coordiantor.

No way to predict how things will go wrong, if they do.

If we wind up with a poor season, we won't know the cause until we see it play out.

without even waiting to see how the offense performs, you expect failure. Lol

Ramsdell will help spice up Shula's offense.

I cannot wait until G-man is out of this cap hell.   Soon he can bring in Top Tier free agents and make the Panthers a dynasty.

Hilariously awesome imagining Gettleman as a high school coach talking to his players about hogmollies and blue goose 16 year olds.

Bill Polian:

"When he was a high school coach and we were living in the same town we talked football all the time and I recognized he had a real good grasp of what talent evaluation was. That hasn't changed. It's just grown.''

I personally love GMan as the GM. He is working towards getting rid of the ghost of Hurney & don't expect under him to ever be in that cap situation again. He will not overpay for talent, he is very good at evaluating & filling team needs with what little wiggle room he's had. He's tough yeah, but that what this franchise needed. If your not producing to the level your getting paid why keep you. I also love the fact that him & Rivera believe in young talent & developing it. Always the biggest problem I had with Fox as a coach. With a solid draft & blessed health where be fine & another year closer to not being strapped for cash anymore.

    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
    • The most telling sign, IMO, of a team on the upward swing is who we lost in the off-season. Who left that even saw the field? Woods, Clowney, Sanders, & Hekker. OK...no big deal. Clowney is the only 1 that I raised an eyebrow over and I get that it was a money decision. No need to pay him over $7M to take snaps from our draft picks when he was just OK last year.
