Round 1 - Carolina Panthers select WR Kelvin Benjamin FSU

I trust that Proehl will show him his ceiling which is a scary scary thought for opposing teams.

Dude will be surrounded by Vets and not to mention Proehl. If any WR has a chance to learn it will be him. Not to mention it does not hurt that your QB is 6'5" as well so your not going to get too many low passes.

My concerns are pretty well documented in more detail here.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks elite, top-end speed and many catches are contested. Hand use could improve releasing vs. tight, press coverage. Overly grabby. Is not yet a nuanced route runner and does not sink his hips and pop in and out of his breaks. Does not shake many defenders after the catch. Will make the easy concentration drop and focus could stand to improve at the break point (three drops vs. Florida). Seeks to run before securing the ball and double-catches more than he should. Blocking effort/sustainability has room to improve on the move. Has a 32 1/2-inch vertical jump and recorded the slowest 60-yard shuttle time (12.10 seconds) of any receiver at the combine.

Not very excited about this pick.  He's a project, has the size of a tight end, and I don't know if he's all that mature.  It might be three years before we get the best out of him.  Not too mention he only recently began to shape up during the middle of the collegiate season.  Who knows if that was just a blimp or not.  Just too many question marks with this guy.  For a team who needs good players that are expected to start, this is a questionable pick in my book.  He better lose that weight.

Also...the Panthers don't have a very good history with receivers from USC (See Dwayne Jarrett and Keyshawn)

And Colbert...

I loved Lee, hell I loved Woods last year

but this was definitely eating at me

I was buying into Morgan Moses but I love the KB pick.  What I'm really excited about is that from rumors earlier today (Voth) and how fast we turned in the pick he might have been the plan all along.  Which tells me that Gettlemen really, really likes him.  And since I think G-man is a fantastic judge of talent that tells me that KB is even more talented than I thought.

I liked Cooks a lot but I just wanted something different since we've had Smitty all these year although I'm not happy at all he went to the Saints.  With this draft being so deep at WR I could see us getting another really good WR in the 2nd.  A WR who in last years draft would be in the bottom of the 1st round.

Love the KB pick and can't wait to see what my Panthers do tomorrow.

    • I think the qualification has changed over time though. A deep ball play used to take 4 to 6 seconds for the receiver to get to that spot on the field. Now a receiver can be there in 2.5. That's less time than most QBs have to set and throw. In my mind a deep route takes time to develop. A crossing route and a deep route can't take the same amount of time at full speed. You can have 4 deep balls on the same drive,  almost 5 if you do 5 20 yard throws goal line to goal line. That doesn't even make sense when you say it out loud.
    • The sad part is it looks manicured enough that he's aware it's running away from him.  Also, I just wanted to give you some fun loving grief on King Haynes today having a chance to throw a game winning TD, and was wildly errant, and ultimately picked off to end the game.  So happy I won't have to hear anything else about The Golden Calf of Bristol lite ever again watching college football.
    • I just think Panthers believe in Bryce far more than the fans do and he is most likely going to be the QB at least the next two seasons. the real shot of us moving from Bryce is not getting an extension, till then they are going to give him every chance to succeed and I just want to win.
