Gettleman on Boston "He sets a tone, he's a very physical player"

Hell, we may have done it last year. Not sure Kugzilla would've been drafted had we not pulled the trigger on him. All it takes is one team.

That's pretty debatable. The guy hasn't even played in a game yet though, time will tell.

I wasn't a fan of the pick (and I'm a UNC fan) but after I sat and thought about it him sitting for two years behind DeCoud will be good for him. Not sure he'll be a great starter but have high hopes for him.

And thats what bothers me. I mean surely they had to be a halfway decent tackle that could have atleast come and start this year and be better than what we have. Cason, Harper, Decoud, Godfrey coming back. Is Boston really neccesary?

In his defense, ( and this is from a State fan) The 4-2-5 defense is a nightmare for defensive backs, especially safeties. It's kinda counter intuitive because you think it would be easier since there is an extra defensive back. Also, the coverages can be really tricky because they are so different than most base coverages.

Those players have so much on their shoulders because they have to play the run much more than they normally do in a tradition 4-3 or 3-4. I think this may have slowed his reads down a lot.

There is so much that goes into being a good defensive back. Defensive backs are almost always products of their defense as a whole and their position coach (teaching the correct keys).

I guess I am making excuses for him, but I am guessing they see enough talent there to justify the pick and maybe are thinking he would benefit from a more traditional system.

4 paragraphes defending a UNC player.... I need a shower.

You nailed it!! He was much better in the 4-3.

UNC season football ticket holder here. As some one who LOVES UNC football I will try and offer up my best scouting report I can on Tre.

Tre came in as a 3* cb recruit by Butch Davis out of Florida so with those of you saying he came in "highly rated" that would be incorrect. Tre, like a lot of Florida boys has a lot more swagger and a lot more things to say from the secondary position. I've met him at 3 meet the Heels events and you could kinda see him grow up from each one. I can see why people say he has maturity issues to an extent, but he has maturity issues in the same sense that he's gonna keep talking to the offensive guys letting them know he's there time and time again. So in essence if you liked. Mike Mitchell you'll love Tre in the same regard. Dude is a leader in the secondary and those immature comments are way off base IMO....you need vocal leaders in the back end of your defense and he fits the bill...danced all practice to keep the energy up....gave the pregame pep talks....took the young DBS under his wing ect ect.

Now....on the field. Tre came in and did an above average job at corner as a freshmen showing promise along the way however as his time at UNC went on he kind of leveled off but it is fair to attribute the lack of coaching stability until Fed got there a little blame. Hard to become a great player with a lack of coaching stability. He got moved to corner two years ago and under D coordinator Vic Koennig he did get better from one year to the next so he is absolutely coachable.

Assets: Tre is a hard hitting safety who knows where to line people up at. Smart football player that had to cover up A LOT of UNC's other dbs mistakes. While he got a lot of grief from UNC fans (myself included) he actually was the reason a lot of big plays weren't actually touchdowns. High motor guy who loves football and is fiery throughout. Literally plays like a young Mike Mitchell if you want a former Panther to compare him to.

Deficits: Lacks ideal top end speed, somewhat stiff hips and takes bad angles on plays a little to often. Now to be fair from his junior to senior year a lot of these issues got better as the year went on but tackling and angles will be a point of emphasis. He also tends to leave a few turnover opportunities on the field but with proper coaching this can be addressed. Very much so an in your face player so on some weaker teams he may not blend but I feel as though our defense will love his passion.

Overall: I was surprised to see Tre get drafted in the 4th but I understand the fit for our defense. Will start as a special teams guy and will excel in that role intially because the dude loves football and loves to hit. Pair him with the strong coaching and veteren precense in our locker room and 2-3 years from now we'll be looking at a slightly slower, but better covering version of Mike Mitchell with dreads. Thoughts?

GM Dave Gettleman on #Panthers fourth-round pick Tre Boston: "He sets a tone, he's a very physical player.

Seems an aggressive backfield is still something we are very much interested in after the departure of Mike Mitchell. Does Boston have the swagger necessary?

I trust Gettleman with this draft class. If the wheels fall off then next year I will question him.

Like I said in another thread.  My friend breaths and sleeps UNC.  He said that Boston came in as a highly rated player that never quite panned out.  he said that Boston has decent speed and athleticism, but gives up too many big plays over the top.  He said that there is no way he would have drafted Boston and could have justified taking James Hurst at that pick, and he would have been a lot happier.

He had 2 coaches, 2 DCs, and he played 3 positions.  While I agree with your friend, the defensive scheme was so complex the team did not grasp it until the Miami game, and followed with a 5-game win streak.

Confused players play slow and they make mental mistakes.  He had every reason to be confused.  He still had 5 interceptions and led the team in tackles.

Watch the combine workouts.  The guy is smooth and fast.  I think he will be developed slowly and will play fast and confident in due time.

What did Gettlemen say..? In rounds 1-3 you ask, what can't a prospect do? And in rounds 4-7, you ask what CAN a prospect do?

Boston seems to have a lot of flaws, but even those that are down on him admit he can do a lot of good things as well.

Let's just hope the good outweighs the bad. For a fourth round pick that would be enough.
