Yahoo Sports: Is Cam Most Underrated QB?

There was an enormous bandage on Cam Newton's side as he walked through the locker room after Sunday's 24-7 victory against the Detroit Lions. It was in the shape of an X.

"X marks the spot!" joked one Carolina Panthers teammate.

Newton grinned. That teammate was right. A huge target has been on Newton since he got into the league as a flashy No. 1 overall pick in 2011. He's been criticized for his sideline demeanor and scrutinized after a difficult second season in the league.

On Sunday, the target was physical, too. Newton has been limited by a sore ankle and a hairline rib fracture – hence the bandage. He couldn't even play in Week 1 at Tampa, and so he went out onto the field Sunday to face one of the league's best defensive fronts without ever having thrown a meaningful pass to any of his current receivers. Newton is known as a mobile quarterback, but all he could really do against Ndamukong Suh and the Lions was stand in the pocket and throw.

He was fantastic: resilient, efficient and sharp.

We all know its because he is here in Carolina.  If he were anywhere else that even resembled a big market we would be bombarded with this kids face.  He is already wining the war though and soon you wont be able to hide his shine and everyone will know who he and we are.

What difficult second season?

Yeah, an overall good read, but I have some problems with it, like that comment and this one- ".....  Dave Gettleman, who got deserved heat for letting Smith go." I don't think it was deserved. I think it was smart for the long run. This team is tight now- tighter than it would have been with Smith still around.

As for calling Cam underrated, how can you look at his stats and underrate him? I don't get it.

... but that GodAwful Yahoo site is choppy as hell.

I wouldn't call it choppy. The word I'd use has the same number of letters though, starts with 's' and ends with 'y'.

if anything, it seems very undeserved right now

GOAT.  It's his destiny and our destiny.  Greatest dynasty of the salary cap era is beginning and in it's infancy.

    • Exactly He's played two seasons and started 28 games. He's well beyond the point of being able to point to 2 or 3 games and being able to say, "THAT is the QB he is and will be in the future" Of course he can get there, but anyone trying to use just those couple of games to rank his place amongst the games QB's today and their full career's worth of playing at that level, is just asinine. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Daniels, Stafford, Goff, Geno, Purdy, Baker, Love, Dak, Tua, Kyler, Lawrence That's 17 QB's right there that have played better over their careers than Bryce has played at his best.  And I'm not saying they're all studs or guys I'd want to be our QB moving forward, Tua for example I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but his body of work is a million times better than Bryce's has been. It's also not including any of the other QB's drafted in 2023/2024 other than Daniels. So again, say you believe in Bryce, say you think he's going to prove he can and should be our QB of the future, that's all fair and totally fine. But nobody can say he's been an above average QB in his career thus far, it's just an asinine notion.
    • I'd think we could get one of those from Dallas for... whatever.
