PFT: Bears might rather face Newton

Bears defense may prefer to face Cam Newton

From the article...

There’s a good chance they prefer that to squaring off against the Panthers and quarterback Derek Anderson.

With Newton still limited by offseason ankle surgery and a preseason rib injury, Anderson could give the Panthers a better chance to win — especially since the Bears already have beaten in their own buildings this year young, mobile quarterbacks like Colin Kaepernick and Geno Smith.  With the full breadth of Newton’s game restricted, the Bears could have a harder time defending a pocket passer like Anderson.

And no, that’s not funny.  There’s nothing funny about that.

This assumes that the Panthers won’t be ready to “unleash” Newton by Sunday.  They definitely weren’t ready to do that in Baltimore last Sunday, where the home team preferred defending an impaired Newton to a healthy Anderson.

Of course, Anderson isn’t exactly Johnny Unitas.  Yes, the former Browns starter has had his moments, but there’s a reason he’s currently not a starter on one of the other teams.  However, until Newton can do all the things he did last year and previously, it could be that Anderson really does give Carolina a better option.

Oy

To be clear, nothing anywhere in the article indicates he's talked to anyone in the Bears organization.

This is all pure speculation on Florio's part.

I will provide the backstory to this. Florio was on WFNZ this morning and mentioned that he spoke to people within the Ravens organization and he said the Ravens game plan was to not hurt Can Newton because they wanted to face an injured Cam instead of a healthy Anderson.

When Mac heard him say that, he said that statement ruined his day because now all the Cam haters will come out in force. Florio said he didn't realize that the healthy Anderson vs. hurt Cam was such a hot topic.

And hour later it is a topic on PFT.

Well played Florio, Well played.

i do however find it interesting he makes no mention of what he says he was told about the Ravens preferring to play Cam instead of Anderson. Said it on the radio, but not in print. Take that as you will.

Cam is just as good of a picket passer as Anderson, although DA does seen to get rid if the ball slightly quicker, so there's that.

Thats a big that against the bears defense and our offensibe line.

Although, DA came within a dropped interception from losing against Tampa Bay.

ugh

That is curious given that it would provide backup for his statements.

I've said before that I like Derek Anderson The Backup, but Derek Anderson The Starter makes me nervous.

That's still true.

    • Ok fair to judge only his starts.  But you do acknowledge that going from "he's waaaay above league average in a number of categories" to "here's a single stat where he's above league average (not "waaaay") and another where he is exactly at the league average" is a pretty significant backpedal, no?  I'm guessing he's probably in the ~10th range for completion percentage too if we're only looking at starts (I'm too lazy to isolate his starts and do the calculations), so I'll grant you that one too.  But I don't think completion percentage is all that meaningful as a standalone stat if it isn't bolstered by good TD%, Y/A, etc. On that note, for how much people like posting Passing Charts in here (*cough* CRA) - if you peep Shough's passing charts, he hasn't completed a single 20+ yard pass in the past 3 games combined.  His last one was in Week 13 against the Dolphins, which was a single pass of 24 yards.  I just want to be consistent in how we apply our standards - I think it's always been warranted to criticize Bryce for it (even dating back to his rookie season), but do we suddenly not care about that with Shough? And yeah I did acknowledge that Saints' fans have reason to be excited about him and complimented his poise, which is giving my props.  Still not sure I agree that he looks better than a "ton" of QBs nor do I think you or anyone have really demonstrated that.  I think you are generally one of the more reasonable level-headed posters which is why I'm confused at what I consider to be rather hyperbolic language about Shough.
    • I don't disagree with you, but want to point out that Tremble's strong suit has always been blocking. Case and point: on Horn's 25 yard run, he lays down not 1 but 2 nice blocks...and is looking for #3! https://www.panthers.com/video/jimmy-horn-jr-s-25-yard-run-gives-panthers-red-zone-access-on-first-drive
    • It is a popularity contest.  The selection does have meaning though. It is also 1 of the criteria that is considered for the HOF. The game does not have any significance. The team hasn't been to the playoffs in nearly a decade. That's why they don't get primetime national coverage. To the victors go the spoils.
