I want to open a pub

I don't think you and I are thinking the same thing. The one thing I've learned in doing my studies about it is that you can't think of your place as a tourist destination (i.e., pulling in people from other major cities). You have to build your clientele from your own area first before that line of thinking (getting people over an hour away to come) is even an option.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was saying. Opening a random pub isn't going to be a destination itself. And lord knows Forest City is not a destination. Really nobody is going to drive "only" an hour just to go there so I'm not sure why you think it's a good location because there are 3 major cities all about an hour away. I don't even really see that as relevant. All you would be counting on is locals, which is a small population and without even looking it up I'm guessing towards the lower end of the average income scale. Really this is just about the last place I'd open a bar.

My wife has been in the private country club management business over 26 years now and she is always being asked why she doesn't open her own restaurant/bar concept.

The simple answer.... you will be ripped off by your employees unless you are there during all business hours and then some. There's not as much money to be made as some would have you believe. Food and labor costs, proper margins, taxes, vendors... yeah, it may sound easy, but there's nothing easy about it.

you could maybe find some kind of happy medium between doing nothing at all and going all-in on a business idea that can literally ruin your life if it doesn't go according to plan.  maybe something tangentially related to that area.  i don't know jack about it myself but i have friends that brew their own beer and are involved in that scene and they seem to have a blast doing it.
