Us sucking D on Defense, is it the coaches or the talent?

Recommended Posts

The front 7 is a great approach if you have the D-line. CJ is playing at a below avg level even with the DT help. Missing that one elite DE is trickling down to the rest of the DL, LB, and secondary.

That should give the coaching a heads up that there shouldn't be such an over-reliance on one aspect. We are signing back up and should be retired cb's into our secondary thinking that our front 7 is that godly. From what has transpired so far this season obviously they are not. I think honestly that even if hardy was playing with the team, we would still way worse than last year due to the huge drop in quality of our secondary.

Maybe, but it's hard to say. It's possible that with Hardy being out, CJ and Star only looking slightly above average, Mitchell, Mikel and Cap'n would have looked putrid as well.

Its a combination of things:

Charles Johnson has been playing hurt all year and has not been himself.

Losing Greg Hardy.

We downgraded at both safety positions.

With Bene out, and even with him in, we downgraded our nickel position from Captain (tbf nothing we could do about losing him or Mitchell no way I would give them the deals they got- we're trying to get out of cap hell)

Having TD hurt in the Steelers and out vs. the Ravens really hurt us.

Star is kind of in a sophomore slump (although he did play better today).

KK is not getting enough snaps.

Cason has been both hot and cold with his play. Though if our d-line was as good as it was last year it wouldn't be as noticeable.

In essence, d-line play is way down this year, and we got worse in the secondary. That results in a much worse defense.

Tackling is the difference. Last year we tackled well in the open field and limited yards after the catch. This year everyone is missing tackles and giving up big plays. This defense requires everyone to do their job. Just 1 or 2 guys out of position on any play and we get picked apart. Even. Guys like Davis are giving up big plays.
