Pete Prisco Sings Cam's Praises

All these Cam accolades make me feel weird. . .

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/pete-prisco/24754866/after-further-review-cam-newton-is-making-the-evolution-to-an-elite-qb

When I sat down to talk with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton last summer, I noticed a real change in him, a maturing man who seemed light years away from the Newton of his first two seasons.

Then again, as some of the recent NFL happenings have reminded us -- like Adrian Peterson -- the small glimpse into the players' football lives only gives us a chance to make snap decisions about who we think they are as people. But when I left the interview with Newton that day, I thought he came off as a more reflective quarterback, one more willing to take on the responsibilities of playing the marquee position in sports.

The notion that he was a player who didn't care, a quarterback who could only succeed in some gimmicked-up offense to take advantage of his legs, with a look-at-me attitude of a player who would never lead a team the right way seemed something he wanted to disprove -- and would disprove.

Fourteen months later, I think we're seeing just that, which is why we are watching a different Newton play quarterback. His numbers aren't outrageously gaudy, but Newton is playing one of heck of a brand of quarterback for the Panthers right now.

Thank you captain obvious(Prisco).  The media were dead set on Cam being a bust.  It baffled me because they were behind so many guys that have the bust traits like Ponder, Locker, and Gabbert.  They laid low last year crediting the defense and hoping no one remembered all the shite they talked.  Now everyone wants to pop up singing his praises because it is undeniable.  Ponder, Locker, and Gabbert just flat out can't play.  Cam just showed extreme displeasure over losing while wearing a towel to shield his head.  They crucified him for it.  All the while he was still an upstanding citizen and teammate.  I just take it as the older I get, the more  I can see the media take slants against certain players.

Cam has always been a franchise QB and the media will continue to get their comeuppance.

This is in the long line of Peter King_esque, "no no I wasn't wrong all along, it was Cam who changed!"

No. He is just becoming more experienced as an NFL QB, something some of us had been saying all along.

Bandwagon is full media. No room for you. (New Panthers fans are always welcome though)

Not exactly, after he said Cam had matured and changed......he then talked about how we often create snapshots about these guys that aren't actually true (good and bad).

Doing that at least opens the door that Cam also likely was a victim of that

Cam was a little immature. I will not deny that. He did some things that showed that. (Towel over head wasn't one of them) However, he was ALWAYS a dynamic QB. Broke passing and rushing records in the same season with no training camp. Luck broke just one, they put him on a throne. His attitude was bad, but his ability should have never been in question. (He did have issues over throwing some time, but not that serious)

F Pete Prisco, too late little buddy.

Lol people can't change their minds? So if anyone ever said anything bad about cam ever can never say anything good about cam now. Makes perfect sense. I guess no one can ever credit eli manning ever even after winning 2 Super Bowls.

That comment aside I am glad cam is getting recognition. It might have taken longer then he deserved but good for him.

But the media hates Cam.

derp.

I've never really thought the media hated Cam (except maybe Peter King).

I just think most of them are lazy, stupid, no talent, assclowns, who are determined to hold every fleeting hope that Cam turns out to not be a very good QB, because of their predraft evaluations proving their incompetence.

It isn't hate, it is ego. And the media has more ego and fake smiles than Cam ever did.

Have I mentioned I hate most (not all though) media members and draftniks?

I don't even like most of the local guy except Zod and Bill Voth.

I applaud Prisco for actually watching Cam play and confirming what is obvious instead of spinning Cam's play to fit the wrong ongoing narrative. Kudos bro.

I would be overjoyed if Cam can be the NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP this year, and see Jaworski, Cowherd, King, Bayless, and Casserly wiggle their way out of that...:-)

I have never been happier to admit how wrong I was than I am when it comes to Cam Newton. I remember his last year in college when the scandal with his dad was going on and thought he was just another running quarterback that wouldn't make it in the NFL. When we took him I was pissed. Of course I came around his rookie season. What took these guys in the media so long?

    • Yup. I'm exactly as dedicated to this team as they are to putting a quality product on the field. Life is too short to spend getting upset about garbage.  I'm a fan. I'll (probably) always be a fan. But because I am not submitting myself to weekly torture doesn't mean my fandom is less pure than anyone else's.
    • It a message board so I can see the difference in what we are talking about. Quote by 45cat: "Yes, but it's only in these circumstances where he thrives, that's the problem  He can't be a true franchise QB and wait until the game is out of reach when the defense goes into prevent defense to finally flip on his baller switch." The circumstances where he thrives being only times when the game is out of reach and garbage time. That is the lie. It was 45cat who defined his play in garbage time as "turning on his baller switch".  I don't think I've even given the illusion that Bryce "can" be a franchise QB if he only "flips on his baller switch" during garbage time.  I don't think anyone has ever said that.  The whole point of what he is saying is that you can't give Bryce credit for garbage time.  I agree. I just happen to think it's hyperbole to say that is the only time he's played well.  There are more than 2 choices of "He sucks, cut him.  Worst QB ever" and "Franchise QB".  I've consistently said over and over that despite his bad play, he has only shown a ton of improvement overall in the last 10 games from last year.  The difference from game 1 last year to game 18 was something very few fans even thought possible. People saying he was too small and would never hold up in the NFL.  Dude can take a shot.  People saying he doesn't have the ability to throw down the field.  That great pass in game 1 from this year that Nola should have caught in the endzone was 43 yards in the air.  He can make all the throws. They said he can't throw when pressured.  Was one of the top QB's under pressure over the 2nd half of last season.   They said he doesn't throw deep.  Had one of the highest deep pass attempts in the league over the 2nd half of the season. They said, Oh, well, he can but he's not good at it.  Of those deep passes he was one of the most accurate despite a high drop rate by his receivers. People keep saying it's been 3 years.  That's enough time to see he sucks.  In reality it's been 2 years and 2 games.  There is no way I'll ever believe his rookie year didn't set him back.  No matter what was said it was a horrible situation on every level.  We are trying to come out of and build from that Frank Reich year which I hope was the bottom of the barrel.  I've never seen a worse situation for a rookie QB, maybe for any QB.  I don't think it's that much of a stretch after how bad that year was for any players development to set it aside and say that year doesn't paint an accurate picture.     I'm not even arguing for Bryce in so much as I'm arguing to have more patience and quit with the hyperbole and over the top statement or outright lies.  It's only because a handful of the same people have hated Bryce since he was drafted and have rarely given him credit for what he has done and can do. It's the lack of an accurate representation of Bryce and our situation and the development of players. 2021 - It was Derrick Brown's 2nd year, week 11.  He was benched.  Calls to trade him.  He sucks.  The Panthers are cursed.  Fast forward a few years and he has developed into one of the best players on the team and a Captain.   I don't know if Bryce will spiral and completely bust or if it's just a rocky road to stardom like so many players before him.  We have very little to lose and everything to gain by staying the course right now.
    • Sure let’s do better. I want a bad ass defensive guy. Vrabel would have made me happy.  Finesse teams do offense. And we are damned sure trying to do finesse. Can’t even do that right, we have nothing going.
