Jarryd Hayne quits rugby league to try out for NFL

Renowned for his acceleration and counter-attacking prowess in the rugby league, Hayne said he believes he has the skills to make it as either a punt returner or kick returner.

"I believe I have the speed, I'm a quick learner, I feel things out really quickly," he said. "I have no doubt it's going to be tough. Ultimately it's a 12-month plan, going over there and trying to make a train-on team. For me to do that I need to start preparing for that around January or February." The 2014 NFL season is underway, so he's aiming for 2015.

Hayne travelled to the United States for a personal tour of the Seahawks and University of Washington Huskies' operations in September, less than three months after speaking to Fairfax Media in Australia about his desire to play American football.

He had two training sessions with UTS, a Sydney-based American football team, at the end of the 2013 NRL season and said "it's something that excites me."

"I actually spoke to Reggie Bush in depth about it when he was over here," he told Fairfax in July. "We were talking about different plays, what Detroit was like, what Miami was like and New Orleans was like. It interests me."

To be perfectly honest, the idea's a little "out there" for me, but I thought I'd leave it here for people to read and speculate on.

Read the first sentence.

Meh, I don't think he'd help us there either. I'd rather try out De'Andre Presley as you mentioned elsewhere. I do believe I read elsewhere that long-term he projects as a LB or RB. I'll see if I can dig it up.

edit: ah, the first thread on this topic is where I saw it:

    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
    • It was always a matter of time with Cam’s playing style and a shorter shelf life than passers that protect themselves. I suppose Cam could have still been playing in 2028 ten years after the hit took place, but he would need to have evolved as a quarterback and become more of a passer than the dual threat maestro he was. It’s sad because it makes us think of what could have been, but I do feel it was always a matter of time until all the hits took their toll.
