Question for couch coordinators...

I would like to see quicker routes. We know our o line can't hold up long so when not try to get the ball out quicker. I would like to see more screens as well. Get Philly brown in on some of those screens. Also at this point, I want to see more plays ran out of the i-formation with a lead blocker.

Is there an offensive philosophy that works with our current roster?

Lots of bootlegs, sweeps, screens....

Our offensive line looks better if they are on the offensive and getting aggressive. When they are in a traditional hold your ground pass protect mode they look awful.

I don't claim to be an offensive couch guru but I will say this I never want to see cam under center on a QB sneak with our current oline when the entire stadium knows what's gonna happen!!!! Put that man in shotgun let him pick a hole and either go up top for it or use his 6'5 frame to get it, they take away so much momentum putting him under center on sneaks!

I agree with this philosophy. Get the defense on their heels. Right now we are too predictable. If we actually utilized Cam's running ability in our passing attack, I think it would mask some of our offensive line inefficiencies. Couple that with screens and sweeps, and we open up the ability to fake the screen and hand off to the RB. Might seem gimmicky, but until our D gets back on track, we need points. The ground and pound approach isn't working with our current roster, so let's mix it up.

I'm going to be honest, I had to look up the Coryell Offense. According to wikipedia:

"Overall the goal of the Coryell offense is to have at least two downfield, fast wide receivers who adjust to the deep pass very well, combined with a sturdy pocket quarterback with a strong arm. The Coryell offense uses three key weapons. The first is a strong inside running game, the second is its ability to strike deep with two or more receivers on any play, and the third is to not only use those two attacks in cooperation with each other, but to include a great deal of mid-range passing to a TE, WR, or back."

If that is the case, it isn't just our poor protection and running game, but lack of FAST WRs that is holding us back also.

If we can't establish the run, what would you do to move the ball? Allow Cam to do it all?

Norv and Rivers ran the best Coryell in the NFL for a few years, go back and watch some of those games.  (Before Norv Norved Rivers)

They had Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd on the outside.  Not fast, but could get behind you and win a jump ball.  Think KB and possibly Bersin when he is ready.

He had Gates in the seams, and LT/Ryan Matthews out of the backfield with Sproles/Tolbert as the change of pace guys.

We have the personnel to run the Coryell pretty well, however, I don't think that we have the offensive coordinator.  After next season, when we start trying to fix the OLine, and we bring in a RB with some pop, we should be good.

This season....I'm quickly writing off.

you would think we should be exposing other teams weaknesses, i am starting to think we have one game plan no matter who we are playing and that is both sides of the ball.  for example, the Packers are notoriously know for struggling with QB option plays, and we ran like 4 all game.

We have the worst.

I'd say we are pretty far off from having the talent to do what they did

It seems that every time we find something that actually works playcalling wise, we immediately go away from it.

its because if its too good to be true, it prolly is. Shula was amazed something he called actually worked and didnt want to risk doing it again.

You are asking for two different things.

We are set up to run a Coryell, that's what we will need to continue to run. The issue is we have too much money tied up in RB's (stupid all the time) and not enough in the O Line (stupid almost all the time).

Coryell is based on a power running game, and we don't have the ability to have one right now.

I think we are actually setup better to run a WCO offense... Possession receivers whose route running would best be used with timing routes, RBs that can catch out of backfield (Stew & Fozzy), and a bad OL that requires a quicker passing scheme..

The only real question is if Cam is too stupid to pick up on reading defenses and if he has proven whether he can adapt his game around the scheme... All of which I think he would be fine, esp with more practice in such a scheme...

Cam isn't a WCO QB. Doesn't make much sense to take your best weapon player and run a scheme that plays to his weakness

IMO, and I know every OC has their own "interpretation" of a system, Shula's take on the Coryell system has it screwed up.  The damage is done when spreading out the offense, which in turn spreads out the opposing defense, making them defend the entire field.  We only do that on rare occasions.  It needs to be spread out, and incorporate much more motion than we currently do.  Shula uses a lot of "traditional" formations, and it completely kills the concept of the Coryell system.  I am of the feeling that you are, in that I believe we have the personnel to run it pretty well, even with a shoddy o-line(WR size makes up for lack of speed thinking).  Reason being, if our offense/their defense is spread out, like it should be, there's a lot less pressure, and blocking assignments, for our line to deal with.  That may help the run game.

Coryell is predicated on both running to set up the pass, and passing to set up the run.

Defenses were scared of what Rivers could do to them on the outside, that creates running in the middle.

Defenses don't seem to be as afraid of Cam on the outside, the inside however makes them pretty nervous.
