12-4.....and why it was so bad.

I normally try to keep a low profile on The Huddle after losses, especially to division rivals, but I felt I needed to touch on this.

Without last seasons run to the division title, I believe that the Panthers would be in a much better spot than we find ourselves today.  I have touched on it a couple times in different threads, but figured I would toss it up here with the rest of the BS that is flying around.

Riverboat Ron would most likely be gone, along with Shula, who IMO is the worst part of this football team outside of the cap mess.  Now, we are most likely stuck with Ron for at least 1 more if not 2 more seasons, and I don't know if he has it in him to get rid of Shula.

Last season was fun while it lasted, but I think that we will feel the repercussions for a couple more seasons to come because of it.

The team looked set up for sustained success last year.  Young franchise QB winning games in the 4th Quarter, the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL with the defensive player of the year at MLB.  A defensive line that lead the NFL in sacks that featured two rookies playing a significant number of snaps.

Problem is, they didn't upgrade ANYWHERE on the roster.  They downgraded the offensive line, the WR's are about the same, the secondary is worse.  You can't have this huge amount of turnover on the roster year to year and expect to win every season.

At first I was like "wha..", and then I read the part where you said Rivera would most likely have been gone.  Cheerios to you sir! :goodjob:

We fudged up when we gave Rivera and extension and we knew he didn't deserve it. Outside of the one winning season we had last year this coaching staff and team hasn't shown me anything in 4 years. This season we have completely regressed in all stages and I don't see it getting any better.

We overachieved and we are paying for it now. Need better picks and some more money to compete.

Agreed.  I think that our division was not as good as advertised, we were healthier than most normal NFL teams, we got great mileage out of an older LT, and the ball bounced our way more times than not.

Last season is going to hurt us badly in the long run.

This is extremely accurate.  While Shula and Ron have made some questionable calls in the public eye I think they are under a lot more scrutiny due to the lack of talent.  So if and when Gman goes to pointing fingers he needs to look in the mirror first.  Maybe he did what he thought was best in terms of now and the future but we have fielded a bad football team.  There are some good players but the team is inadequate.

It's reminiscent of the 2008 team. Way overpowered in one area (rush attack then, front four more recently) and doing just enough right elsewhere to put up the Ws. Underlying problems were exposed in the playoffs.

Except going into 2009 the refrain was "we're returning 21 of 22 starters from a 12-4 team!"

There needs to be a mix of turnover and continuity.  You can't expect the same team to return and deliver the same results the next year and you can't expect to overhaul half the team and expect success either.  Hopefully you keep developing young guys that can step up year-to-year but the Panthers have been so far behind in just keeping quality starters on the field.

2009 also had a lot to do with Jake Delhomme being washed up over them returning starters from 2008, but the point is still valid.

I think JR and DG will be talking more frequently beginning this week.

That was just not an NFL offense...we saw it coming into the year and you know what? The majority of "crappy" sports writers did as well.  Just downright embarrassing for the SECOND time on national TV this year.

I just don't get how any other coach/GM pairing would be ok with the team that we've trotted out this season.

The majority of the fan base wanted Bell benched at RT last season, EVERYONE saw how bad he was, and this staff went out and made him our starting LT.  The other moves, let's sign this Velasco guy and draft Turner.  Oh, and Chandler looked ok at RG/RT, let's make him our full time starting RT.

WRs, well we drafted one so back to BPA no matter what.  Don't prioritize in the draft!

Also, the fact that they think they can pick up random UDFAs and make them starter caliber is laughable.  Melvin White, Chandler, Bell, Foucault, Bersin, Brown, Lester, Horton...I mean come on.  Who's DG think he is?

Also, Gettleman gave the impresion at first that he was using the financial situation to bring in young talent that may have underachieved but still have good potential in the FA.  Then this year, he goes out and gets vets that are proven to be liabilities.  Cason, Harper, DeCoud...what the hell.

Throughout the offseason everyone was like, "This can't really be it?", "We have to be doing something on the OL", "In Gettle I trust", yada yada and as training camp approached, everyone just accepted it and we all blinded ourselves from what we really felt and knew.

We all saw this OL coming from 1000000000 miles away but Rivera and DG really had some blinders on this offseason and I just don't trust them right now.

Color me shocked if Big Cat authorizes this move so soon into an extension.

You were probably colored shocked when JR let G-Man cut Smitty too.

I don't see Rivera as a problem, and I don't see him getting fired any time this season or offseason, he'll get and should get the first half of next season at least. BUT Shula needs to be fired right now he is fuging pitiful.

    • I could be waaaaaaay off about Kon. I do fault myself into, to borrow a NFL phrase heavily "RAS" nerd on players, too much. There are PLENTY of athletic freak shows that are playing overseas(or Amazon delivery) cause they never figured out NBA ball. I can easily miss seeing the talent. Plus did he only have 2 dunks on the season??(is that for real??) I didn't watch over a few hours of duke, but not one point did I think "That Kon guy is a top 4 pick in the upcoming draft". IMO I still foresee Ball bringing the ball up, doing his weak isolation game and never even looking for Kon. That's his best trait according to everyone, shooting right? I do not see ball, bridges, miller or even williams making the extra pass to Kon for him to shoot a 3.  Then defense-wise, Im not ready to type the amount of questions I foresee in his ability for guarding NBA SGs or bench SFs for that matter. Not that NBA players care to defend, but still..... I just feel he's a bad fit for the current hornets, trades are taking place tho... Liam to me is a decent comp for Kon and he fell some, but was a 29 overall pick. Still around 13-21 was the good solid range for Liam and I thought the same for Kon. This is just a classic case of I need to see it. It add to this, Kon is like garlic. Ball is like sugar and Miller is like flour. Mix it together and chef Lee is not going to get me to eat that dish..... Honestly I don't know why Im this vocal about Kon. In past years I would be patience and not post and see what the kid has. The other side, insert classic white boy terms here- _____, ______, _______< etc >. Hornets do desperately need them. His crafty back door cuts, his willingness to stay a extra 2 hours to refine lees plays, keep playing with bruised limbs. I heard from many reports he's mentally tough and hornets by all gods need that. God they are such pussys.  I hope Im wrong and if so, I will give Kon his just props.
