Rivera says Newton is fine (link)

But Newton says he's hurt (link)

“Hurt is hurt. If you’re asking me, am I hurt right now? Yeah, I’m hurt. I haven’t, you know, felt 100 percent in a long time,” Newton told reporters today. “You ask me a question, is Cam Newton hurt? Yes, I’m hurt. And that’s all honesty. But can I play? Yes, I can play and I will be playing. It’s mind over matter.”

So while Rivera says that Newton isn’t injured — in the sense that he has a medical condition severe enough that it would cause him to miss a game — it’s clear that Newton is in pain, and not playing as well as he would be if he weren’t in pain.

I'm well familiar with the old "injured vs hurt" distinction that coaches tend toward (and so is the writer here) but it's pretty clear from Newton's comments that he isn't buying into that differentiation.

Frustration on Newton's part, or just being plain spoken?

Probably just being plain spoken.

I think Ron has tried to be clever this year with downplaying injuries. He has consistently put out misleading statements about when someone would or would not be ready to play, apparently thinking he is fooling people. In my opinion, this strategy has worked about as well as most of his red flag challenges.

That may be all there is to this controversy.

Tons of players play hurt in the NFL, right or wrong. If cam wasn't playing people would come up with reasons why he is soft or not committed to the team. He's damned if he does damned if he doesn't... I think it just speaks to who cam is as a player that he is gonna play anyway. Everyone on the team still wants a win so rivera wants to let him play until he says no more or gets injured further. Objectively this is what you want out of "competitors" subjectively it's not working out well here.

Maybe I am being naive but why would the same coach that benched Newton to start the season so he could get healthy ignore Cam if Cam told him he was injured?

But on a more serious note, he has a right foot injury? That is not good news at all. Hopefully it does not become a problem. No wonder he is not running that fast.

There are certain injuries that certain players can play through. There are certain injuries that nullify who a player is, like in  Cam's case, a foot injury affecting his running ability. We saw Rodgers become less effective against the Saints and eventually went to the bench when his hamstring flared up. Maybe that is what is affecting his accuracy. I hope he gets time to heal.

    • The new (released today) FOX ONE app will allow you access to watch your Local FOX Station - similar to how the Paramount Plus app allows you access to watch your local CBS station It'll cost you $20/month for the privilege, but if you're having trouble accessing the over-the-air antenna for FOX, this could be an option to consider the new ESPN app will give you access to ESPN content, but not to the local ABC affiliate. A reminder: if you currently get ESPN via some TV provider (cable, satellite, youtube, etc) then you should be able to use the new ESPN app via your provider login, no additional payment required
    • Not even close!!! BURNS was a one trick pony who had a big game or two a year in the sack collum and was invinsible the rest of the time....   Heck hes gonna be the Giants fourth best rusher this year.
    • XL went to one of the worst teams in the NFL.  One that features a weak passing O and bad overall QB play on the season.   XL is getting way too much hate IMO.   He had an okay rookie season all things considered.   Very much on par w/ prospects that projected around the same area with him.   Panthers made a 2nd rounder a first round technicality for that contract.  XL also getting this weird kicker type blame for games.  XL somehow single handedly lost us games on one play.....and then we ignore the rest of the team that went about losing the game for 4 quarters.   Should he of caught the Philly ball? 100%.  The O and D still played like garbage that entire game.  Even after the drop, Panthers had two shots starting w/ a 3rd and 4 to convert.  They kept playing bad instead.  And even if we XL made the play....Philly would have had a minute and half to get into FG range to win it.  Who is banking on the Panther D getting that stop?  also, I am deemed Mr. Negative, yet here I am defending a no good dirty Gamecock lol
