What does Gettleman do about Cam

Cam has been given a top 10 defense. That is a weapon. Hopefully he realizes that and signs a contract that will allow us to keep that defense together.

if anyone thinks newton is a bigger priority than the defense as a whole, they're in for a rude awakening.

as it stands right now, luke kuechly will be the highest paid player on the roster when everything is said and done.

The thread title should tell you what people would be talking about here.  A bit late to try to take the high road.  A person would have to be pretty dumb to assume a poster on this thread is professing to know what the GM of the Panthers actually thinks. However, an intelligent person would assume that the conclusions are circumstantial inferences and assumptions based on the vague and ambiguous comments made by the GM.  It is assumed participants would understand that. I don't think you are that dumb, so your purpose was to be sarcastic without a point.  And you are not qualified to judge anyone, especially if the underlying premise of a discussion board seems to have escaped your grasp.

Really?  Dig deep in your thesaurus for that post?

Maybe I am dumb, but the title infers an opinion.  Where is the opinion in this sentence?

I am just telling you what Gettlemen is thinking.

A person would have to be pretty dumb to not know that you are stating that as a fact, not an opinion.

Since you have demonstrated your superior grasp of the English language with your last post, I would think you would know that saying

"I am just telling you what I believe Gettleman is thinking"

Is probably the better way to state an opinion, therefore us neophytes and the dimwitted don't get confused again.

After all I don't know talking good like you so my vocabulistics are limited

The highest LB salary in the league is around $12m.

Cam's set to make 14.5m on the 5th year option of his rookie contract. #

Cam is going to be the highest paid player in the history of the panthers, if he gets either a low end or high end franchise QB contract. That's the nature of the current market.

That's silly, even if Cam doesn't get a long term deal and is tagged he'll make 54 million over the next three seasons all of it fully guaranteed. If he's given a long term deal, he'll see double over a 6 year period with the same amount of guaranteed.

The team really has three options, tag him, trade/ let him walk or make him a massive 20 million a season offer. That's it, end of story, Cam will make roughly 19+ million the next three seasons. Take it or leave it.

Further more the crowd on here that says Cam won't see top 10 QB money don't understand his position and why he's not been in a hurry to negotiate with the team.

Teams position = Cam most marketable player on team by long shot, tons of NFL records, sales tickets.... Loose him, back to drawing board for QB and a 3-4 win team...coach fired, gm fired....ext...

Cam's position - Most rushing TD's by NFL qb in first four years, 2nd most total touchdowns....Has top ten rushing Td numbers since entering the league....top 12-14 passing yardage, top 12 passing TD's and top 10 total yards since being drafted. 2 time pro bowler, oRoy....all ready set to make millions by standing pat.

Cam knows his position and what he'll make by standing pat, 14.66 m fully guaranteed in 2015, 18.4 mil fully guaranteed in 2016 and finally 21m fully guaranteed in 2017...by not even negotiating with the team.

Why would he take a contract where he's not at least guaranteed the above????? That's 54 million guaranteed over the next three seasons...the offer will have at least 5-6 million more in guaranteed money just be on Cam's playing field contract wise.

As I've said from the beginning, expect 6 years 120+ million and half of it fully guaranteed.

I think the issue is not the total contract amount, but guaranteed money.  Cam will get a hefty dollar figure based on the market, but if you want to see what kind of money the Panthers feel confident paying him, you will have to examine the contract structure.  Dalton and Kaepernick provide some good models for something similar.

Now, before some people scream, "Cam is better than those 2..." remember that they were not first rounders.  Cam's situation is a bit different because we can take advantage of the $14m, 5th year thing.  This offseason should add a WR and solidify the OL.  That should take away the reasons Cam's play suffered in 2014, or the excuses.  I have a feeling that they will pay Cam, but only guarantee what he is worth.  Cam will not be given a Manning or possibly even a Flacco deal at this point.  Flacco has a ring and is a top 10 QB.

Gettlemen might begin negotiations (assuming that he has not already) to see where the Cam camp sits, but if he sees an impasse, he could start looking into plan B.  Cam's willingness to play for incentives is going to be critical to coming to terms.

If Cam seems unwilling to budge from a lofty contract, I see Gettlemen walking away.  I see him drafting a young QB (weak draft, I know) and going with Anderson for a season. Maybe drafting another one next year.  The $16-20 million he saved could lock down Kuechly and sign a LT.   If we build an offense on running the ball and defense, maybe he will think we do not need an expensive qb.  I mean, if you have to build the perfect line,  add stud rbs, add stud WRs, and have a top 5 defense for your QB to succeed, maybe Gettlemen will decide not to spend $20m on the QB position.   I am pretty sure he is not emotional about Cam and is considering all options.

I think that quality and rapport with receivers causes a lot of problems.  Cam completed 68% of his passes to Olsen, and only 51% to Benjamin.  And his turnovers, to the disbelief of Panthers fans aren't a problem at all.  He ranks 13th with 12 int.  He doesn't have a fumbling problem, and is extremely durable.  We can obviously make the playoffs with him at the helm, so therefore he's worth keeping... it's a no-brainer.  Jake Delhomme reincarnate isn't coming to take you all out of your misery. (don't forget how much an in-his-prime Steve Smith did for his stats and career).

We increase talent, Cam will improve, coaches should be held to the same standard, and voila, Cam looks the part, and we are going to the ship.  He was put in the worst position to succeed in his entire career, and did better than expected considering the circumstances.  Don't be so blind Panther brethren.

Always remember Panther's fans.  You get what you pay for.  There are no free agent QBs, we aren't "bad" enough to command a high pick rookie, and there are absolutely zero players worth trading for.  Don't try to hop on board when he's holding the Lombardi.

You guys need a hobby, aside from trolling my posts. Pathetic. I guess it is easier to attack me than defend your own thinking, or lack of it.

No it's more like you are an annoying know it all.

im taking the stand back approach because I have no clue what's going to happen with cam and you don't know what gettleman is thinking or what cam is thinking. These "reports" of cam wanting top 5 qb money are worthless. We don't have a clue. But when you "suggest" cam gets kap or dalton type deals it speaks of your ignorance on cam and the type of player he is and how the organization views him.

Ps I was the guy who made the thread stating wilson is better than cam as of right now and had people threaten me

The problem with this line of thinking is that Cam has no reason to negotiate with Carolina if they aren't willing to give in on guaranteed money. The Panther's aren't going to loose him to free agency, so he'll get at least this season's fully guaranteed money plus a tag or Tag and trade next offseason. He stands to make 32 million at least fully guaranteed the next two seasons without even talking to the Panthers. If he stays and gets tagged again, then add another 21m fully guaranteed to that just by doing nothing at all.

Second, Cam has Bus Cook and he won't settle for anything short of ground breaking because of Cam's stats. look at Cutler, Mike Wallace or Calvin Johnson as an example.

I actually do think they'll offer him that kind of deal.  Maybe with more guaranteed than the other two got, but I don't see it being a blockbuster.

Whether or not he'd accept such an offer is another story.

Has Cam earned a lucrative, mostly-guaranteed contract?  I would think if he had removed doubt before now, he would have it.  I am guessing that there is some gray area and that is where Bus and Gettlemen will have to hash it out.

You are, essentially, doing a great job of setting Cam's side of the negotiations, and illustrating why I see a potential impasse.  Gettlemen may not, and probably doesn't,  agree with your perspective (or Cam's, if that was your intent).  And I am not sure you can build around a QB you are having to tag.  I don't know--with Hardy, it was to rent him until a solution could be reached--and we drafted Ealy.  Now Hardy is gone.  Your points are good, from Cam's perspective, but Gettlemen may not be looking at this like, "We have to keep Cam at all costs".  In other words, If Cam does not accept the offer, or the compromised offer, he does not seem like the guy who would hand Bus Cook the checkbook.  Gettlemen's number 1 priority is getting the cap into a manageable situation in order to build a franchise on smart contracts that benefit the Panthers.  I don't think Gettlemen will allow any one player to jeopardize that plan.  I think there will be some deal worked out, but I don't think there is reason to assume Cam has Gettlemen by the short hairs.  When I watch Gettlemen's presser, I hear him mention Cam's mechanics and his inconsistency along with calling him a franchise QB--only when asked directly.  To me, that is warning people--maybe Bus himself-- that Cam is not a finished product.  Everyone wants Cam to stay--me too--but at the right price. Most people arguing that he deserves top dollar are also the people saying he needs weapons and protection.  Where is the money for weapons and protection coming from?  The defense?  Which is the known commodity-the defense or an inconsistent and mechanically-unsound QB with weapons and protection?  You have limited resources, and Cam has to know that he needs help. Tom Brady gets it, which is why he agreed to take a cut.

Bus Cook's reputation is why I see potential conflict.  Are you assuming Gettlemen will give in to Bus' demands?  I am not.  Frankly, if Cam is given a "ground-breaking" deal that features a ton of guaranteed money, I would be shocked.  I think they will pay him, but guaranteed money goes to proven, consistent performers--Gettlemen said that Cam is not there yet.

You have good points, but I was focused on what Gettlemen will do, and my hunch is based on his comments and past performance.  Still, this is his first big contract, so we shall see.
