Colin Cole Re-Signed

Question:

Lets say we sign other DTs or draft one or two..  Could this be just an insurance signing. In other words, we go through training camp and we realize we have better players than Cole, could he be cut? Same with Dwan, we bring them both back. Is this an example of setting up the draft with FA?

BTW, quoting notifications are down for me. I get pie notifications, but one someone quotes me I only know about it when I re-read through the thread

I kind of think they respect him enough to not sign him now and then cut him in TC.

Same here no quote notifications, just pie.

And yes this is a perfect example of free agency setting up the draft. Now we have no pressure to draft another run stuffer and start reaching. Makes BPA easier to do.

IDK man, DG can be cold.

I think he will take the best 53.

Very true. This only means Cole will be at training camp. Getts could still draft his replacement if the board swung that way and the new guy was better than Colin in camp. After all, Cole is a back-up.

If Cole could be cut in/after camp, would you guys think he would be going balls to the wall, really pushing for that spot more than if he knows at this moment in time he will be on the team out of mutual respect?

I dont think DG plays that game..

perfect signing.  we'll probably draft a dt to groom for the rotation in the mid to late rounds

"The $1.05 million deal falls under the veteran benefit category, which means they get a salary cap break and he gets a chance to hang around another year."

Getty magic

... classified under an NFL rule known as the "veteran minimum salary benefit" that was written into the most recent collective bargaining agreement (CBA) as a way to help make veterans more affordable to teams. It uses a formula to reduce the cap hit of a player's base salary so long as the signing bonus remains under a certain level.

Gettlemagic indeed.

    • Ravens mixing it up with a random Mark Andrew tush push last year isn't a similar situation.  Lamar has run QB sneaks his entire career.  And often instead of a traditional sneak will even employ a 4th and 1 direct snap to Lamar simply because of how athletic he is (which even Cam did a lot of) and let him pick his own holes.
    • height being an issue doesn't just mean batted balls.  You could argue Bryce minimizes batted balls by adopting other poor habits such as his jump passing and leaving the pocket.   As I said, there are plays you can point to where he clearly was blind to parts of the field/players....which kills plays and opportunity. Which actually means some of the shorter/hot throws when things break down are where his vision gets blocked (and he had below average production all around the line of scrimmage).   has he figured it out? I mean, he improved off a trainwreck start.  But Bryce Young since arriving in the league (even while figuring it out)......doesn't generate much offensive production vs his peers.  I just think his ceiling is low.   And that's not in the grand scheme what you want in the NFL.  I think he can develop into a serviceable QB, that will largely always been a middle of the pack or low end starter.
    • People make a lot of noise about his footwork and I think it is overblown. Whether he takes 3 steps backwards or 5 small steps doesn't matter as long as he ends up at the right depth and is in sync with  the receiver regarding timing. If he does that consistently who cares as long as he has a firm stable base as he delivers the ball. Which he does need to work on. However even that is somewhat overblown given that often QBs have to throw off balance or from different arm angles to fit the ball around defenders. He is considered very accurate so apparently it isn't hurting him that much.
