his latest mock (Mar 17) has us taking 6-2/212 WR Breshad Perriman of AAC Co-Champs UCF (who didn't work out at Combine due to hamstring, but his Pro Day is tomorrow), writing:

"Carolina went with a wide receiver in the first round a year ago, and I expect a repeat. Though offensive line remains a glaring issue, Perriman is the type of selection who can further elevate quarterback Cam Newton's game. A 6-2, 215-pound specimen, he's a wild-card prospect who has some scouts' mouths watering and others calling him a project. He didn't compete at the Combine, even further making his first-round grade a difficult one to cement. Perriman isn't a household name, but I like the fit for Carolina."

his 1st R WRs:

#4 Kevin White - "has all the tools"

#10 Amari Cooper - "a rare talent"

#11 DeVante Parker - "can end up jumping even Amari Cooper"

#12 Jaelen Strong - "has a lot of upside"

#25 Breshad Perriman

#31 Dorial Green-Beckham - "no questions as to whether he can play the game"

#32 Nelson Agholor - "best player available...Agholor at 32nd overall would be quite a haul"

If the top 4 WRs go in the first 12 picks, I'd prefer to look elsewhere at #25.

 

IMO, those top 4 WRs are about as close to sure things as you're going to find in the draft, but after that there's a pretty steep drop off but a lot of depth.  I'm not convinced there's a big difference between the #5 WR and the #10 WR.

This is why I won't be shocked if we go defense in round one. The top 4 WRs are likely gone, and there will be a run of OL before our pick because everyone always needs OL. Gettleman won't reach for offense just because we struggled there.

      Will be interesting to see how the Caps adjust. They were thoroughly beaten in this game despite it going to OT and they knew it by getting chippy. If they lose game 2 they’re in a hole they might not be able to dig themselves out of. They played old and tired tonight and I think they might get swept.

      He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.

      Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
