Mike Shula

I think people give this guy too much poo. He had been working with a limited offense, and a stellar defense. He isn't going to force plays when his defense is allowing him to win games.

His line was bad, his receivers were iffy, and his quarterback was injured. Of course you are going to call shorter pass plays, and more runs. It only makes sense.

When Rivera was talking in his last press conference, he harped on how these new draft picks allowed them to do things differently, schematically, on both offense and defense.

So, please, stop the circlejerk. The guy did what he could with the resources he had, while accepting that his defense was the way to win.

I think our offense might just work with Shula pulling the strings. We have nothing splashy or sneaky- we will line up our huge O-line to run the rock with Stewy, Fozzy and Cam. That will set up our monster WRs and Pro Bowl TE to attack downfield. Kinda like the Seattle defense: there is no trick-ery to them.. they just line up and beat you from the 1st qtr to the 4th.

Shula's offense is so vanilla that our personnel might just fit him and Rivera perfectly.

Panther fans are not judging him solely based on last year.  Or for the year prior for that matter.  With 6 years as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, he has never had an offense ranked in the top 15 in yards per game or in points per game.

Year (YPG,PPG)

1996 (28th, 30th)

1997 (29th, 23rd)

1998 (22nd, 18th)

1999 (28th, 27th)

He then spent 4 years as the Head Coach of Alabama:The Tide struggled under Shula, as the offense could not consistently move the ball once inside the red zone.

Year (YPG,PPG)

2013 (26th, 18th)

2014 (16th, 19th)

Once upon a time, there were many Shula defenders. Those ranks have lost many numbers since 2013. As Shula's offense shows its weaknesses and limitations week in and week out, a few more jump off that sinking ship. I am amazed people who have faith in Shula still exist.

    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
    • This thread is dumb. But I do think canales gets too cute with play calling and I don't think he's a good coach
    • 2 bad teams played yesterday and one lost. Both teams are still bad today. Bryce is a big part of that. It wouldn't have been a close game if DC would have just gone rage rushing from the start.  The Panthers would look so much better with just decent WB play. No way to avoid that fact.
