"To be honest with you, and I've never said this any place else, I don't think Cam Newton's a first-round pick," Theismann told 980 AM in Washington, D.C., via The Washington Post...

"You're talking about a kid that started one year of football," Theismann said. "He's rushed the ball a lot more than he's thrown it. He hasn't thrown the football a lot. And when he did throw at the combine, he was not impressive....I think the interview that he did with Jon Gruden (on ESPN) showed another side of him that wasn't impressive....I like all these (quarterbacks) as kids, but I'm talking about purely as football players, I think wherever you go, you're stretching."

Q: What was your initial reaction to Cam Newton’s contract extension (five-year, $103.8 million)?

A: I was excited for Cam. ... Cam had himself in a situation where he’s a good enough football player. I think he deserves it, because that’s what the market bears. The big thing, I mentioned this on a radio show the other day, for Cam ... is don’t try to justify your money. Continue to improve as a football player and a leader of this football team. But don’t feel like you need to justify to anybody the amount of money you’re making. I think that’s one of the most important things and one of the pitfalls the guys fall into. Everybody is going to come up to him and say, “Now you have to earn your money.” You already have earned your money. Now it’s a question of getting better at your trade...

A: Cam’s shown an awfully lot of toughness. He’s shown mental fortitude. He’s continued to improve at his trade, which is throwing the football. Nobody doubts his athletic skills. I watch him do things that are just phenomenal. It’s nigh on impossible to do some of the things. Physically, I considered myself a mobile quarterback. I watch Cam, and I’m humbled in a big way by his ability to escape. I think he has to become more accurate as a pocket passer. That’s the one element he can work on and continue to get better and better at. But it’s the team that’s coming together around him. You need to be able to run the football, you need to be able to play great defense and you need receivers you’re comfortable with. That’s what I think is going to happen this year. I still think Carolina is still the team in the (NFC South) division to beat.

Way to come out of the shadows and into the sunshine, Joe.  :)

I don't think he said anything all that bad years ago. He was saying Cam was raw. Very raw. And then he says he's progressed nicely to the point where he's saying he likes where he and this team are headed.

Don't get me wrong, I think his analysis was wrong back then but his logic is pretty consistent.

He wasn't saying anything a bunch of other people weren't saying when Cam came out.  At least he has evolved in his opinions on Can which is more than you can say about many other pundits who still seem to think Can shouldn't even be starting.

    • agree to disagree you are entitled to that opinion even though I find the argument completely bizarre based on data. I could type out a long paragraph discussing those areas but what’s the point. I posted a screenshot that showed Bryce in a similar post snap situation with a free rusher in his face which resulted in a TD - that’s what happened on the play so I posted it.
    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
