Most and Least injured teams over the past two years

The graphic was apparently posted by a Reddit user, source unknown.  Their stats might have been pulled from Football Outsiders, who tracks a metric of games lost to injury, or they could be using info from longtime Dallas Writer Rick Gosselin who has done a similar thing before (link).

The Eagles grade out as the healthiest team in 2013-2014 while the Giants come out as the worst.

And the Panthers?  According to this, we were the 19th healthiest team in 2013 and the 6th healthiest in 2014.  That puts us at 10th overall for the two year period.

Maybe I'm just being skeptical, but were we really healthier last year than the year we went 12-4?

I do know injuries last year played a role in getting us some new starters.

Longtime Panther fans have a sense that we're generally among the most injured teams.

Don't know how true that actually is (never did a stat comparison).  I suspect it's at least a little overblown, but that's just an opinion and I'm not up for researching it.

Long time Panther fans love excuses IME.

Lol, go back to just 2011 and 2012 and I bet it looks a whole lot different.  We set our franchise record for most players on IR in consecutive seasons both those years IIRC.

We were beat up to hell last season, but most guys played through their injuries: Cam, CJ, TD, Star, etc.

Even still we had quite a few injuries to key players that caused them to miss significant time.  Deangelo, Stewart, Tolbert, Trai, Bene, Philly.  Those are/were all starters and huge parts to our team.  Meanwhile this list probably counts every back up that stubbed his toe into the equation.

That combined with the fact that we cut and benched quite a few people that led to a huge roster turnover, even though those aren't injuries, it just shows the level of crap we went through last season.

It's not just the number of injuries, it's the significance of who got injured.  Back end of roster guys that get injured don't have near the effect of players at key positions...and we have had a large number of key players with injuries.  Also, your depth impacts the effect of your team's injuries, and until recently, we probably had some of the weakest depth in the NFL, so couldn't overcome our injuries.

These stats also don't fully take into account players that play with injuries.  For instance, while Cam was on the field for most of the year, his injuries seriously impacted his ability to play at a high level.  So, while we may have technically had fewer injuries that forced players out of the game, they did play a huge role in our bad middle part of the season last year.

Glad to see a high rank for '14 (considering the W/L record), and obviously don't want to see one for this year. Glad to see a low injury rate for Tampa and Atlanta last year, but not happy to see NO ranked 9th. If they're healthy this year they're likely our biggest roadblock to another division win.

You're reading it wrong. Saints were the ninth healthiest

This. ^^^^^^^^^^^^.

like in most situations, quality means much more than quantity.

Teams can stash project/fringe roster players on IR and the teams that do this more often will greatly skew their injury stats. For example, we had Kugbila on IR for two straight years, though in general, the Panthers don't use this trick that often.

In the last couple of years we've been lucky with injuries, as is reflected here. For the Panthers entire history I'd say we end up around average, which probabilities tend to do over the long run.

In the past it only seemed like we were unlucky because we had no depth (due to Hurney not being able to draft outside of the 1st round, and spending all the cap space on 6 players). When one or two injuries can completely derail your season it's easy to end up feeling like you're getting killed because of injuries.

Not just you, I don't believe at all that we were the 6th healthiest last year. We lost pretty much all of our "starters" on the o-line, Norman, Bene, TD and Klein were hurt at times, Stew, D-Will, Tolbert all hurt, Philly, probably some more I'm forgetting. Oh... CAM! I mean come on.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
