Jason Whitlock on PTI: Who compares to Jack Lambert? Luke

Recommended Posts

Said he's got the toughness and the mean streak like Jack.

good comparison. I loved how Luke got some props from his fellow pass rusher last night too. After being revealed as the #1 player in the league, JJ Watt was asked who he thought should have been in the top 10 with him. And impromptu, first player that came to his mind was Luke Kuechly. I cheered

The fact that people hate Watt on here is disgusting.  Watt is an absolute monster, and dude came from nothing to something.  There is one player I would trade Luke for straight up, and that's Watt.  That's literally it.

Olsen was on the radio yesterday and commented on this out of nowhere (he was not asked). Luke's position is more important to the defense than Watt's. MLB is involved in more plays and cannot really be avoided. He said you can run away from Watt, you can avoid throwing near Revis but you cannot avoid Luke. I would not trade him for any defensive player. I probably wouldn't trade him for any player period since I'm happy with Cam.

That's cool, Watt was ranked number 1 for a reason.  He changes games.  I would trade him for Luke in a heartbeat.

Luke's not as vicious as Lambert.  I think level of play is comparable, as is competitiveness and toughness.  But Jack Lambert was a mean SOB whose style of play would draw lots of flags in today's NFL.  To me, not a good comparison.

Without Luke, our Defense wouldn't be what it is today.  both infront and behind him.  Watt controls his area of the line...nothing else.  He is a foot solider in the army of a defense, Luke is the General.

toughness . yeah

tackling ability yeah

coverage ability yeah

meanstreak?  No.  But todays game is different.

I saw Lambert play with the Steelers in the 70s and 80s as part of the steel curtain and outside of mean Joe Greene, he was the most intimidating guy on their defense.  He was an in your face kind of guy who likes to hit and hurt folks.  I would agree with you that their skill sets are similar but Luke is not as mean or intimidating as Lambert.  You are right that the game has changed quite a bit and guys like Lambert would not have been able to play today the way they did back then.  That is why it is hard to compare guys who played in different generations.

Yeah, because the Texans defense besides Watt is nasty or something.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
