How the Panthers spend: Cornerback

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

We'll find out whether or not that's true when it's time to deal with Josh Norman's contract.  We simply haven't had anyone to pay during Gentleman's time here.  We can't know that it's his philosophy to cheap out on CBs.  We're about to have a guy come up for a payday.  Let's just sit back and see what happens.

He believes with a strong front seven he can get away without paying for top cornerbacks.

Well, he's not gonna pay big money for a FA, but we won't know what he really thinks about the CB position until a top draft pick becomes available.

Does anyone else get pissed off by the laziness of all the writers and analysts talking about how Benwikere is "Best" in the slot?

No he wasn't. He was great in the slot, but he was a BEAST on the outside, something they don't seem to realize for some reason... I will not be surprised if Bene beats Tillman as the #2 then just slides inside on nickle packages.

This.  Everyone wants him at nickel for some reason and I can't understand it.  No, he doesn't have ideal size to play outside, but he's done it and done it very well.  I'll take proven performance on the field over ideal on paper measurements all day everyday.  A good outside CB is much harder to find than a good nickel.  Let him play nickel when we run nickel, but I wouldn't want to take him off the field when we're running 4-3.

I'm really curious if the Panthers keep Norman.  He's primed for a breakout year.  Would be great if they could lock him up at a reduced rate before the season to save some cap space next year...but I have a feeling he walks.  If he has the year most expect him to, the Panthers won't be able to afford him.

Don't be surprised if we let him walk. Gettleman's philosophy is building through the hog mollies. He'd rather throw the big money at the big guys then the secondary.

In my opinion, and I could very well be wrong, if Big Frank and Norman both crush it next year, they would throw the money at Alexander before Norman in order to keep a strong defensive line in tact.

I'd be very leery of throwing big money at Big Frank.  He's one more dirty piss away from a year long suspension.

G-Man's point of spending is going to be in front.  Period.  He would rather let a good corner walk/not sign a splashy CB, and would sink money into either the OL or DL.  I, for one, like that philosophy.

I think you are correct as this seems to be his philosophy but I do think he is not going to over spend up front. I think what happens with Norman will be interesting.

    • Man, we're desperate around here.  I had to look at Peppers' stats to see if I'm missing something, but no, he's an average guy at best.  Nothing impressive at all in his stats.  He's not a true safety at all, and I'm kind of annoyed with the jack of all trades players at this point.  Of course I see the PFF scores and everything, but I'm old school.  I believe the stats tell more about the player than the analytics.  This ain't moneyball here. (haha)  The best players put up numbers.  And when I look at the numbers, Peppers is just another player running around on the field.
    • People see what they want.  I have also stated since the moment we drafted Bryce….a badly owned team was screwing HIM over by setting him up to fail by coach/scheme design.   Core criticism isn’t actually Bryce…it’s Carolina/front office.  I could see Bryce being good.  I could see Canales being good.  But I don’t see them as a pairing.  Football is about fit.  Board is doing what the board does.  People were idiots who dared question the All Star staff.  People raged when Fitterer was criticized.  They raged when Rhule was criticized.   Until they didn’t.
    • Yeah and to make it weirder Moehrig is a FS, Peppers is a SS.
