If we go into 2015 with Oher and Amini and Frenchie as our LT depth I will be a bit concerned.

"But WAIT, there's more...."  You get CHANDLER too, just pay a small shipping & handling fee.

Seriously, when I read these lines in the write up of today's press conference, I wondered if the folks assembled groaned aloud!  I certainly did.

“It puts a greater importance on any of the backups at tackle as far as we’re concerned,” coach Ron Rivera said. “We feel like we have some veteran guys who are in good position that can be starters for us, and they’re going to be starters for us. The question going into this is who’s going to backup left tackle.”

The Panthers will shuffle through a handful of guys as they look for an answer.

Nate Chandler, who lost a training camp battle to Bryon Bell last year, will get a shot. So will guard Amini Silatolu, who played left tackle in college. Even rookie Daryl Williams, who spent nearly his entire career at Oklahoma on the right side, will get a look.

But who will initially line up behind Oher during Friday night’s first practice?

“I don’t know. It won’t be me,” Gettleman said. “You’ve got to let them get on the field and play it out.”

Well it's better than last year when we had no clue who the OL would be. This year we have some continuity among the starters, and time for Oher to adjust and gel with the rest of the line. I'm concerned. But no where near as concerned as I was last year at this time

Agree,  It's become habit to moan about LT, and it is a concern.  But if Norwell, Turner & Remmers play like they did at end of  last season, along with Kalil, we've got 4/5s of a not too shabby line.  Now to just find that 5th missing piece.

I like and agree we should look at this through the glass is half full kind of approach. Last year we had Bell and Chandler penciled in as starters. At least this year the RT spot seems to be upgrade and there is healthy competition. Oher is the question mark for sure. Worst case scenario is I don't think he can be any worse than Bell. Still, would love to get some insurance come first cuts.

In some ways tackle is easier than guard. It requires more athleticism but is less complicated in terms of blocking assignments. Silatolu struggles with stunts, blitz pickup, etc... so he would be less exposed mentally and more exposed physically.

      I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.

      Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.

      Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
