Steve Smith Makes It Clear - HE Will Choose Who He Retires With

At the end of the day our front office made the decision, rightly or wrongly, to show Steve Smith the door last season. If he had never been shown the door, he would still be here and could have played his entire career here and retired a Panther. That didn't happen. poo happens. And Smith was let go and he joined the Ravens. Our team moved on. He moved on. And so should we....

Now don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of his. He's probably my favorite Panther. And in an ideal world he will comeback and sign a symbolic contract to retire as a Panther. We've seen it happen before with John Kasay and Mushin Muhammad. And this offseason the Jaguars brought back MoJo to retire a Jag despite them showing him the door the year before [something he wasn't very happy about]. Maybe Smitty does the same, then again, should we really blame him if he decides to retire a Raven or retire quietly [or loudly if they win a Super Bowl]?

I wouldn't blame him for not coming back and retiring a Panther after being shown the exit as they did. I know this is a business and they have to make tough calls - I don't envy them on that - but the way they handled his release was wrong. And unless both parties can suck it up for the greater good [ie us fans], we may have to accept a scenario where Smitty doesn't retire a Panther.

But let's say he doesn't retire a Panther, will that hurt his legacy? No. He's still a great. He's still made a huge contribution to this team on and off the field. And that is what will be celebrated and remembered, not some symbolic contract and press conference where he tears up. What we will remember is those big plays he made for us. The great comeback year. The chip on his shoulder he played with. The great outbursts like his most recent one for us: "ice up, son". And so on... That is what will be remembered. And in time he should be in the ring of honor and have his own statue. But right now we may have to accept that retiring a Panther might not be a guarantee.

If he cold cocked a teammate and basically ended his career these days, his ass would have been gone. From what I recall, that wasn't the only incident either.

I respect his football skills....but not the person. Don't care if he retires here or not.

Who cares?  I love smitty, but he acts like a child sometimes.  He can retire a Jacksonville Jaguar for all I care.  He was great for us, but he's still butt hurt over a business decision.  It was time to move on, get over it 89.  This organization was/is moving in a direction where aging prima donnas aren't going to get us to where we need to be.

Steve Smith is like the girlfriend that you love for whatever reason, and then when you break up you hate them for the same reasons.

His salty dickheadedness endeared him to Carolina fans, but now that he is focusing that salty energy towards the Panthers, it makes him seem like kind of a shithead.

to me he seems like the old gf that you know is hooked on you and will fug you when you want.

next year seems good.

    • Many layers my frend- Panthers had a draft recently. They picked 4 defense players. Each player picked 11, 22, 33, 55 as their number. For some players that number match the round or pre-draft round rank, example- Prince was a 3rd rounder and choose 33. Nic was a 1st rounder on some mock drafts and Dan Morgan said they had him as a 1st, he picked 11. Cam Jackson recently switched his number to 55, same as draft and has been telling Dave he wants to be special over and over.  The 44 was to add GOAT feels, thoughts, and more intrigue to this rookie phenomenon. X files cause it was a great TV show and maybe it was playing when this theory came together.......   I hope this helps!
    • The best things Purdy has are certainly important tools for any QB. His accuracy his timing his decision making etc. I feel like he is a high end Teddy Bridgewater. You can compete and win in the regular season with this especially in a weakened NFC but where his limitations come into focus is when you are trying to contend for a Super Bowl you are going against elite and in some instances generational QB's like Mahomes. And when the time has come for him to go up against Mahomes he simply can't get it done. Now certainly he is not alone in that regard and people will point to another highly regarded QB such as Josh Allen who also cannot get by Mahomes. But the difference I see is Allen is not IMO at a phsyical disadvantage in that matchup whereas Purdy is. And that is with what had been to this point a comically stacked roster around Purdy and let's be clear we cannot understate that regardless of which side of the fence we land on in this debate. Purdy has had a top 5 roster and a top 5 coach. And the last time they went to the Super Bowl they leaned on McCaffrey extremely heavily. Now with what they are having to pay him and divert limited resources elsewhere they face a steep climb to get back to the Super Bowl let alone actually win it.
    • Lonzo mentioned Melo going to the Clippers, but he also said we would draft Dylan Harper and he isn't making it to 4.
