Love the Daryl Williams blurb (which I expected the day we drafted him)

Gettleman is building a machine. He's already has that winning attitude built in the locker room winning the NFCS back to back seasons.  He's locked up the core players and brought in some serious young talent.  This team is still more talented than last year, strengthening the OL even more. Funch and Brown getting the reps under their belts this season will make next year deadly when Benjamin coming back.

I disagree. Harper looked physically outmatched on the field last year. If he starts, it's because of his "veteran leadership," which I do think Rivera puts too much emphasis on. Many of the rookies getting playing time at the end of the year were in because Rivera was forced to by injuries and bad play. But it took too long in my opinion. Let's not forget, for just one example, how long Josh Norman rode the pine because of his "inexperience." We missed out on pretty much all of his team-friendly rookie contract years in order to watch guys like Cason be "experienced."

first of all Harper was fine against the run but not against the pass. That has been the case for years. His veteran leadership is more than being on the field. It is teaching the young guys how to be a veteran, how to read film, how to react when things go good or bad. That happens every day not just in games.

I love how folks like you think that you can instantly insert a rookie into the lineup and have them perform that well in this defense. If you know what we run then you also know that there are multiple responsibilities and reads for everyone on the defense on every play. It takes time to learn it. Guys were put in when they were ready. If as you say they were put in due to injury or bad play that just meant that Rivera and his staff had to cram that much more into days instead of weeks due to an immediate need. They weren't ready but it was the next man up and they would have to do the best they could. The fact the rookies played as well as they did is a testament to Rivera and his defensive staff. Not something to criticize them for because they didn't do it sooner. Rivera has shown as has Gettleman that they put out who they think is the best option at the time and if it doesn't work out will make adjustments.

Hi all,

reading yet another thread with this debate ("Ron favors too many veterans" versus "look how many rookies we started last year") has got me thinking of a statistic that would be interesting to compare across teams and across years: Total rookie starts per team, per season.

Does anyone know if this data is compiled anywhere?  Would it interest people if I could do some work on it?

If so, can anyone point me to a site where I can find a list of starters for each team for each game?  I've not come across that data in an obvious form anywhere.  Perhaps I'm missing something?

I guess no one else besides the huddle cares about that kind of thing.

So....is "Camp MVP" the kiss of death for our team now?  Last year it was Frank Alexander and he missed almost all of the season (granted that was his own fault) and this year KB is gonna miss the WHOLE season.

Can we start naming opposing players as our camp MVP?

Drew brees for camp mvp next year

Panthers.com writer (and friend of the Huddle) Max Henson gives some solid insight here....

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/2015-Training-Camp-Awards/802035ec-580f-48bc-928b-e3ede924c71e

Definitely worth your clicks to read his analysis.

Here is my take on his picks....

Offensive MVP: KB

No question. KB looked primed for an All-Pro year.

Defensive MVP: Luke

Can't argue this.

Standout Newcomer: Oher

Oher started shaky but finished strong as he acclimated to the left. Hard to argue this. But I might give the nod to Peanut Tillman also who forced many a fumble and looked solid all camp.

Most Improved: Corey Brown

Corey did improve over last camp, that is for sure. I am tempted to give this to Josh Norman though who is really coming into his own.

Pleasent Surprise: Kurt Coleman

Can't argue here. Coleman is this year's Mike Mitchell, but perhaps even better.

Hustle Award: Norwell and Todman

Yep and Yep. Norwell is always running to the ball downfield. Go watch the last preseason game again. The guy has a motor.

I have been preaching Todman for weeks now. The guy is going to really turn heads this year.

I would also add....

Best Rookie:

Daryl Williams - As of today, Williams has stood out as the most consistent rookie on the field in addition to playing at a very high level. Only a matter of time folks....

Let's have some Love for Matsko and the OL

First, I want to say how refreshing it is to know that we have promise at the OT position.  I tip my hat to Matsko (perhaps the position coaches need an award too)---he takes a bust, a Practice Squad player, a fourth-round rookie, and a former DT and turns makes them respectable at a very tough position to play for a big man.

Norwell is one of my favorite players.  It is hard not to have a soft spot for him.  To put that into perspective, I was talking to an Ohio State Alumnus the other day, and he has season tickets. He knows every player on the team, who they are recruiting, assistant coaches etc.  He sang Norwell's praises--was shocked that he was not drafted (we argued about it--he thought Norwell was a sure-fire fourth rounder)

In addition to that, we have Remmers increasing his value and repping at C andTurner coming of age at RG.   I see the stability forming.  Just love me some Norwell, that is all I am saying.

But that can't be. I keep hearing that our OL still sucks and Gettleman is doing nothing to improve it.

Yeah but if they all blow out their knees tonight it will prove DG didn't do enough dammit!!

I like Coleman. I attended 1 TC this year, ironically, the first one after Cam and Norman. We got there early and Coleman came out really early and went to the opposite side of field and started catching balls from the jug machine. "I think that's what they call it. " it's good to see players put in extra work...

    • Skjei is priority number one but I have my doubts that we’ll give him $7M. As for Necas, Buffalo appears to be interested. I’d target Byram.

    • Solid first half against a good LA team. Joao Pedro is getting cooked a bit but the defense overall is playing well and Kahlina has been sharp. Also, love watching Big Pat cook.
