Ted Ginn defies all odds and has a breakout year as a RECEIVER this season, this late in his career?

I have been adamant in my support and Fandom of Ted Ginn, as a returner first and foremost, but with the caveat that he has been and is a situational WR.  

But, what if I'm wrong and he has a career year and proves himself as a legitimate, every down offensive player?

This idea just hit me thinking about how bad our starting recievers look on paper.  But, here is why I'm excited at the idea that this could be a legitimate possibility...  The thing that makes Ginn amazing, is his ability with the ball in his hands.  This is where he is different from virtually every reciever on our roster this season and last...  Not one of them had Ginn's ability once the ball in his hands - the open field ability, the speed, the acceleration, the elusiveness.  Virtually every reciever we've had on the roster in '14 and' 15 were adequate in catching the ball, but not in particularly gifted in YAC, unless catching it in stride on the run (KB included).  That's not a slight towards anyone else, just pointing out that this is clearly one of Ginn's strengths. 

Now, what has obviously held Ginn back and why I have always viewed him as primarily a returner, more than a reciever, is because he may be great with the ball in his hands, but the problem for him has been actually getting the ball in his hands lol.  He has had issues with drops and inconsistency.  But, if he can somehow catch lightning in a bottle again, but this time in extended minutes and an expanded role, this could be extremely exciting. 

Do I trust Shula to find ways to get him the ball?  No comment.  

I'm still looking forward to what moves we make to strengthen reciever following week 1, but thinking about the dimension Ginn gives us again that we have been lacking since he was with us in 2013, is exciting to ponder.

Ginn needs to throw his OSU visor back on for some added swag.

 

But I'm hoping Shula finds ways to get him the ball. For example in 2013 we had LaFell motion into the backfield for the triple option. Last year, it was Cotchery for the most part but Philly got a look or two. This year I'd like to see Ginn in that role, Ginn has never been the type of guy to shake a defender but he can blow by you once he turns that corner and runnin that option with Cam gives him a chance at that. 

 

I'm excited to see Ginn get a shot again this season, really hoping he doesn't disappoint.

Ginn was a very, very good receiver for us. He will willing to put in the work, he ran every route, he blocked, and he caught the ball. Couldn't have asked for more and I think he will definitely break out this year if we can find him a good compliment.

Totally fine with Ginn being the starter, besides Benjamin, he's look like the best receiver this training camp and preseason. The only concern is that we're asking him to do double duties and a returner and receiver. 

I think Ginn is very underrated in this offense with Cam as his Qb.

Smith returned punts and was a receiver his first year. Worked out great.

Most teams just used him for his over the top ability.  We actually used him a variety of ways to compliment his speed and elusiveness.  If you find ways to get him in the open field, besides just running past people on go routes, he can actually be pretty valuable.

If he stays healthy he will probably have a career year. Something about his chemistry with Cam has me very optimistic for Ginn in particular. As for Corey/Philly ..as long as he catches the ball I could care less if he uses his body, hands, and/or feet. His ability to create seperation should be noted. 

Hopefully Shula will utilize the 2 TE formation with Olsen and Dickson to create as many mismatches as possible. That would spring Ginn free a little more from double coverage.

      The "now it's been three years" Grade for the 2023 Draft

      Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
