Rollout Passes

As I watch these NFL games one thing hit me,

When's the last time Shula designed a play for Cam to roll-out and throw the football?

Are those plays a sign of a QB that's not really trustworthy to pass consistent from in the pocket? Or are they just regular plays called to move the ball?

we do this with frequency, actually. it's often designed with drags and comebacks towards the QB's direction. it doesn't seem to be very effective though, which makes me think shula's terrible at disguising it with personnel wrinkles.

but that could be my bias showing

Roll outs are mostly designed to get the quarterback out in space when a team is blitzing him and bringing  pressure or when he is too small to see over the line. The negative about a rollout is that it limits where you can throw the ball by eliminating half the field. There is any huge advantage for Newton to do that unless the offensive line is sucking.

He rolled out on one yesterday and completed the pass. The reason I remember it is because i said "I wish we did this more often"

I see it now it was the ginn catch. I just saw Kaep do it like 4 times and that's all Teddy does his 1st play every game it seems. I just think it's interesting I see it often with them as if thats the only way for them to complete passes

His very first pass as a panther

The plays we call are not bad, iit's how and when we call them that are.  Like running on every first down.

That play typically requires touch on your passes and not 95 mph bullets.

You know when WRs get open you don't have to throw it so hard to fit it in tight windows. You sound like Ron trying to place blame on Cam for that Ginn drop. My damn daughter could have caught that pass.

the deep pass to Ginn was thrown with the right amount of Umph but it was behind Ginn and he got turned around. Ultimately, Ginn dropped that pass but Cam rarely does his receivers any favors and he didn't on that play.

It it appears having an honest discussion about where Cam needs to improve will be futile in this section of the board. Cam does a lot of things really well but there are things he has to work on and accuracy is hands down the biggest one. Ultimately we are a team that put up 13 points on the Jaguars with our defense giving us great field position all day. Sure we left a lot of points on the board but everyone on offense should have their play scrutinized. The panthers aren't good enough right now to not continue improving.

    • Sellers is absolutely one to keep an eye on. Could be the next Cam or could be the next Anthony Richardson. Curious to see how he has progressed come this fall.
    • I think Texas could go 0-12 and he would still go #1 based on his name and traits like you say.  But nusselman and sellers may be actually better qbs.    Man if bryce stinks it up this season its looking like a damn good year to swap out qbs.  Sellers highlights are just fuging jaw dropping
    • I mean, the kid comes from a wealthy family. It's not like he needs the money. He has a ton of potential now we get to see what he can do as a starter. Everyone penciling him in as the #1 overall pick is putting the cart way before the horse. It's 5% because of his talent and what he's showing on the field and 95% because his last name is Manning. And if he is what he's hyped to be the Texas coaching staff needs to be answering some tough questions about why the kid wasn't on the field sooner. Ewers was a good college QB but he's definitely not a "keep a future #1 overall pick waiting" type of college QB. Only getting one season out of a top NFL talent because you chose to keep him buried behind a borderline NFL talent is just coaching negligence. Not starting him as a true freshman? Yeah, I get that. But on year two if the kids is what he's hyped to be you gotta wish Ewers well elsewhere and turn the page.
