Norman takes exception with Gruden's MNF comment

To be honest, when I heard Jon Gruden basically saying that Julio Jones has been uncoverable the last couple of years, I immediately thought of Josh Norman. David Newton reported that Gruden's words made it to Norman, and quite naturally Norman took the opportunity to set the record straight.

"Yeah, I've been seeing that," Norman said of Gruden's comment. "That goes to show you how much he watches film, or how much he pays attention to what goes on to the people he's watching in the NFL.

He then went on to say that he actually covers Jones differently than other receivers. He actually may be more analytical about the way that he approaches the game than many give him credit for (myself included). Referring to the way Byron Maxwell was covering Jones (and Jones having the 141 yard night), this is what Norman had to say:

"Both of them are great players," said Norman, who did not get the big extension he wanted from Carolina before the season. "But I just know Julio. It's kind of what he does and how he brings to the table. It's much different than any other wide receiver. And when you're a DB, you can't play him like you play other wide receivers. If you give him releases like that he's going to do that to you 99.9 percent of the time.

Norman apparently knows what he is talking about, because the proof is in the pudding, and Julio has been far from a plum when Norman has covered him.

It would be a huge huge huge huge loss to let Norman go after this year. We need to extend him as soon as possible. Unfortunately I believe Gettleman when he says he won't negotiate during the season. Thankfully Norman wants to be here badly and won't just go chasing the money somewhere else. If DG makes him a fair offer, which I am confident he will, then I think he'll stay and give a hometown discount -- talking around $7M/year here, while he could easily be worth $10M+/year.

There is no such thing as a "home town discount". We have to meet his market value to keep him. I could see Gettleman telling him to shop around in free agency but give us a chance to match it. He won't take a discount though. Certainly not 3 mil a year.

Yes there is. It's rare but it happens. Randall Cobb gave the packers a discount this offseason. And if you knew Josh at all you'd know how much he wants to be in Carolina. Something respectable like $7-8M/year would without a doubt be enough for him.

Maybe on a 3rd contract but not when its time to get paid off a rookie deal.

Norman said on the podcast that it goes without saying he wants to be here. He also said if this is where God wants him, then this is where he'll be.

Its been my experience that when someone says if this is where God wants me to be, it is typically a precursor to them signing a fat check and going somewhere else.

I wouldn't blame him one bit for getting paid his market value and moving on. Gettleman isn't gonna pay him what he is worth on an open market. No way.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
    • very helpful.  I read back in this thread where they might try Jarvis at C--I thought he and Aho had good chemistry, however.  Nonetheless, he could expand his value there, and now we have a guy who can play jarvis' spot.  Freddie is a pro, no doubt--and as little as I know about the inner workings of strategy and positions, I could tell Burns was burning us at times.  I figured he'd retire and I was looking forward to it.  FWIW, they have Jarvis listed as a C on the 2025-26 roster.
