Part of Gettleman's MO

Mr. Scot

One thing you might notice about some of the Panthers most recent additions is a common phrase...

"The Panthers had scouted him before."

Gettleman clearly keeps tabs on players that he really likes, even after they've been drafted or signed by someone else.  That's how we wound up with Ryan Delaire and Kevin Norwood.

In the past, it's been pretty common in the past for us to hear that the Panthers liked Player X or Player Y or worked out Player Z around draft time, but when those guys weren't drafted they tended to just be forgotten.

Knowing this particular tendency of Gettleman's though, in years to come, you might wanna take note of those guys for future reference.

Even the guys who don't wind up here at first might make it around later.

Grabbing Allen for peanuts since he has basically already been paid this year was a pretty slick move as well...shows he really pays attention to the whole picture and has a good structure in place...I hope we can keep him as GM for at least the next 10 years.

what kind of annoys me about fans is they put everything on Gettleman. In reality the pro and college scouting departments do most of the work. They bring players to his attention and tell him everything about them. They put in countless hours traveling all over the country watching random football players. They deserve some credit every once in a while. Gettleman is amazing at his job though. Couldn't think of anyone better to have. He isn't afraid to make moves when they need to be made.

Sorry to burst your bubble but JR and Getts will both be dead/invalid within 5 to 7.

of course they are a big part of it. Look at Gmans first year here. Terrible draft comparatively. He immediately fires Hurneys old scouts after that draft because he knew they didn't do a good job. So I praise Gman on picking a better scouting team than he came into. Good scouting leads to good grades leading to good drafts leading to good teams

Gettleman is the face of all that.

Nobody ever sees the scouts much. You do tend to see Don Gregory around draft time.

Hitting on 60% of his draft picks, with another pick currently on another team's roster, is hardly terrible, and your statement goes to show how spoiled we've already become by the FO's ability to draft and find UDFAs. I won't really argue the point about scouting though, as he obviously had a reason for switching services and it certainly hasn't hurt things.

What I like about Gettleman is pretty simple:

1. For the first time since the Panthers started I truly feel like there is a plan laid out for the future. I don't feel like we are scrambling just make ends meet.

2. Hog molies! Think about his Star, Short, Ealy were high pics on the defensive side. On the offensive side he has brought in Oher, Turner, Remmers and Norwell. 4 of our 5 players that have now made our offensive line become more than serviceable.

3. Diamonds in the rough. I really feel like we find excellent players in the later rounds or in UDFA or trades or whatever the case. Hurney was a slam dunk in the first round but after that not so much. Gettleman seems to excel at multiple avenues to get players.

There's really not enough you can say about the fantastic job Gettleman is doing. With the additions of Delaire and Norwood it's like we recovered the late round draft picks that we lost trading up for Funch. Delaire went out there and contributed big time against a division rival instantly. It's crazy. I suspect we will see guys like Wegher and Marlowe out there making an impact somewhere down the line as well.

Actually, Gettleman has praised our scouting staff and did not replace them.  Most have been around for years (Director of College Scouting Don Gregory was hired in 2006, for example).  One thing Gettleman DID do was change scouting services from National Scouting Services to BLESTO in 2014.  Those guys are the ones who winnow down the thousands of potential draft picks to the smaller pool that team scouts actually look at.

The reason we've enjoyed our stability in scouting is that our guys are plain good.  You can knock on Hurney all you want, but his mistakes in the draft were generally around either trading away picks or drafting for need.  There were times when he did something that would make you scratch your head, like picking Ryan Kalil, but overall the selections he DID make were pretty good--and that's because of the quality of the draft board these guys help put together.

So no, Gettleman didn't fire any of the scouts.  Rather, he's praised them and made them look even more effective in their jobs by employing a strict BPA philosophy and emphasizing areas that have resulted in a pretty freaking talented team.  Those guys have been good for us for years.

You and I will never agree on the bolded part.

Hurney seemed to be solid in the 1st, but after that.....whew.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
