Kurt Coleman or Mike Mitchell?

I also really liked Mitchell and the attitude he brought.  But for what we need, Coleman works better.  He's more of a cover guy and jack of all trades.  Mitchell was more of a run support and keep everything in front of him guy.  I feel Harper fills that role already, so if we need a Safety to turn and run with someone I'd rather Coleman over Mitchell.  I know Mitchell is probably faster than Coleman, but Coleman seems to have actual covering down better than Mitchell did.

I really can't see how anyone that actually goes deeper into the statistics over their respective careers would pick Mitchell over Coleman. He has just been a step ahead of Mitchell which is probably representative of being a smarter player because the two are similar athletically.

Colemen has the potential to be great, but Mitchell was special in this defense.  We have such a short memory we forget how much he flat out punished dudes.  Coleman is probably better in coverage, but Mitchell was a beast in the run game, he was a headhunter and opposing receivers and running backs did not want to get teed off on by him.

Mitchell did a hell of a job setting the tone. But like @shreddingdefense said, I was worried about him keeping his emotions in check at times. It's one thing when a guy like Norman has trouble with it, since he MORE THAN makes up for it half the time, but Mitchell wasn't that much of a playmaker. He was a will-imposer.

I would probably take Coleman, but it's a very close call. Mitchell overachieved like most of our DBs that season. I know the Steeler fans here (i'm in PA) don't like him very much. Coleman I think will only get better if anything.

Not sure yet. Mitchell had the superior D line which obviously helps, but Coleman has better mates in the secondary. With the way J-no covers we can roll coverage at times so there's less space for the safeties to cover.

If we're bringing contracts into this then the only answer is Coleman, but player to player it's close imo.

    • I'm super excited about the guys we're getting back, and fortunately this year, outside of Robert Hunt, we haven't had any season-threatening injuries. Rico has earned the start, but I am excited to have both available.  The team is finally turning into the run-first team Canales said he wanted to be. As for JT Sanders, I think he has lost the most be being out. He is probably our best receiving TE, but with the emergence of Mitchell Evans & with him and Tommy Tremble both absolutely balling in run blocking, it will be hard to fix something that isn't broken. I'm hoping Turk Wharton can help with our pass rush. We really havent gotten to see him much due to injuries, but we desperately need anyone to provide some pass rush juice, which is what he was brought to do. I'm the most excited about Jalen Coker returning. Theilen may have been the most clutch last year, but I've watched a lot of film, and Coker was the most consistent WR we had when he was out there last year.  I think he can be an ideal #2 to Tmac. While Coker doesn't have the raw athleticism XL does, his route running, savvy, and overall football IQ simply make him better.  I think with the fact Coker can play both outside and in the slot will give our pass game more versatility.  We have been running a lot of 2 TE sets, and I think Tmac & Coker should be the primary WRs for 12 personnel. The other WRs (XL, Tremayne, Renfrow, & Horn) all have roles, but I dont think any of them can fully replace what Coker can do. I do think Renfrow will be inactive this week if everyone is healthy bc of how valuable Tremayne is for ST and as a run blocker. So happy that we are playing meaningful football heading into November. We are still almost certainly a year away, but we are absolutely moving in the right direction
