PFF: "Luke has broken the scale..."

I, like many others, have my gripes and beefs about PFF.  And if I were not a Panthers' fan, I might gripe about their seeming obsession recently with Luke...

But as a Panthers' fan, I'm eating it up.  I know many of us wanted Cam to show out on national TV yesterday to prove his MVP-worthy season.  And Cam didn't play badly, he had some great long throws on 3rd & long, and overall how he managed the game showed tremendous growth.  But Luke stole the day.  If anyone was wondering if all the hype about him being the best LB in the NFL was hype.... it's not.

Here's the latest PFF Luke-fest:

When we developed our 0-100 rating system, we made it to account for every great season we’ve seen so far since beginning to grade every NFL player in the 2007 season, and we even prepared for a player to perform a little better than the best we’ve seen.

We did not account for a player playing significantly better than the best we’ve ever seen, and that’s exactly what Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly is doing. He’s playing so well that it has broken the scale to our 0-100 system.

Kuechly has only played in eight games this season, but even if he were to miss the rest of the season, or regress to the level of an average linebacker for the rest of the season, he already has the best grade we’ve seen from an ILB or 4-3 OLB — ignoring those who predominantly pass rush rather than drop into coverage.

If Kuechly continues on the rate he’s on, he will have a +52.3 grade to end the season, which is incredible for a linebacker. He already leads this list of the 10 highest cumulative season grades we’ve ever given a linebacker:

Rank Name Team Year Overall
1 Luke Kuechly CAR 2015 32.2
2 Michael Boley ATL 2007 30
3 Lavonte David TB 2013 28
4 Luke Kuechly CAR 2014 27.4
5 NaVorro Bowman SF 2011 27.3

I love Kuechly. He doesn't have as flamboyant a personality (at least not when a mic is in front of him) but he plays the game the way it should be. He so clearly has so much passion and seems to be class act on the field and off the field. Hope he retires a panther. He will be one of the best to ever play his position.

You've got to watch Cam's presser from last night when he starts talking about Luke and his "demolition mode" - he get's the most fantastic expression on his face, trying to keep from laughing.  Luke's got such a "Mr Nice guy" reputation on the field, and looks like a lawyer, but get him on the field... and he is MEAN.  You can tell Cam just loves having Luke as his fellow Panthers superstar.
