Good news for the Panthers and their attempt to re-sign JNo in the offseason

Franchise 24....get K.K, Star resigned, and start the restructure process. Leave 2017 for 24 and see what they can get done then. Keep finding gems in FA that don't break the bank and go on. Ginn and Coleman will have to be delt  wtth also by 2017. Maybe tie one of them up next year also.

For Coleman, I just look at Mike Mitchell. Average at best before he got here then had a great season and got a huge deal from the Steelers where he is back to being average at best. Coleman's career highlight before this year was getting trucked by Trent Richardson. We can find a free safety wherever. No need to use up a lot of cap space on one. He would be pushing 30 by then anyway.

If we can, front load the hell out of Norman's deal so we're making him the #1 paid CB in the league for a couple of years with a reduced salary into his 30's.  That way, the contract can be more easily handled if need be.

The cap has always proven to jump, and jump, and jump.  There have only been a couple years of stagnation IIRC from previous research into it.  A "big" contract will scare people....but with all the TV money coming in and the current landscape of the cap, a year or two of paying Norman 13-14 million a year, followed by 9-10 on the last couple years, could be a bargain down the road and allow us to keep a few guys with money coming off the books on the back end.

We need to get Short done too, have a 5th year club option with Star because he was a first round pick.

CJ is making QB money... need to fix that.

We kept CJ this long, I think we save 5 mil next year from his current salary and then I suspect he'll resign to a friendlier deal.

They're almost clear of those numbers.

right, but if he is looking for a certain amount this gives us the opportunity to offer it as opposed to asking him to choose us cause it's us.

im not sure where josh's head is at. but its going to allow other teams to throw more money at him with the cap rise as well, obviously.

these are all "if" questions though. If he really wants to be paid qb money like he alluded to he will not get it here. he won't get the biggest offer here. like i said tag and walk is what i think we are looking at. He will be a few months short of 30 years old when he walks. that is the ideal scenario. i love josh, i've defended josh on here when he struggled and was in the doghouse, i want josh to stay here to finish his career. but we are not gonna sacrifice paying a cb 30+ years of age qb money. that would be a terrible business decision.

It all depends on where Josh's heart is. Does he wanna stay here in this enviornment surrounded by talent or does he wanna go off and be a bright spot on an average defense and get 20 mil a year. Money or Wins? There really isn't a WRONG choice, just preference. Of course I would prefer to stay here in this wonderful family, giving back, winning culture enviornment. But that's MY preference.

Might as well just have a plan to franchise tag him twice. It wouldn't be that much more than what you are proposing for the two years($13M then $16M) and we would get him in "contract years" for both. Then you either hope to re-sign for reasonable money when he's 30 or let him take a big time retirement deal somewhere else.

Franchise him then let him walk for a comp pick after next season. He'll be on the other side of thirty with his next deal.

I believe this is a good strategy. That means he has another "contract year" to perform at a high level. Prove it again, to us or to future suitors.

People worrying about him not being here long term is stupid, we are not going to franchise him, we will sign him to a multi-year deal ... not that hard to figure out

I think there are variables that exist that we can't account for. How well he plays during the rest of the regular season, how he plays during the potential playoffs, what money he thinks he is worth and willing to accept.

G-man has a conservative approach and relies heavily on a cost benefit analysis. I'm not a numbers or contract guy whatsoever.  Just curious why you would think that a multi million dollar deal would be imminent given his age and the option of a franchise tag?

That's a legitimate question btw not being a smartass.

He's a little older, but still only turning 28 December 15th - he'll be 28 for most of 2016

29 for 2017, 30 for 2018 - that is already 3 years of potential great CB play and only 30 still - so if you give say a 5 year contract that is only until his age 32 season, still not that old

If you have a true #1 CB who is relatively young, you lock him up

(It is not like he is a RB where 30 means he is done)

Norman = 3yr/42M,  $22M guaranteed.      Imo.         Not bad.

Not sure where this figure came from, but this is not even close to what he will demand on the market if he finished the season shutting every top receiver down that the Panthers face, earning defensive MVP, going 16-0 in the regular season, and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

If he can say without a doubt he is the best CB in the NFL, he will demand $73.5 million over 5 years with $41.0 million guaranteed. That is an average of $14.7 million per season.

The franchise tag would give him $13.2 million. That could allow the Panthers to deal him down to $14.2 million per season.

He will be expensive, but he is 2.5 years younger than the 2nd best CB in the NFL - Darrelle Revis.
