He's a little older, but still only turning 28 December 15th - he'll be 28 for most of 2016

29 for 2017, 30 for 2018 - that is already 3 years of potential great CB play and only 30 still - so if you give say a 5 year contract that is only until his age 32 season, still not that old

If you have a true #1 CB who is relatively young, you lock him up

That makes sense.

I guess it always comes down to what he is willing to accept vs what G is willing to pay.

FYI Im more focused on one game at a time but just curious.

A question for you and the contract gurus: For a guy that is performing like Norman this year, does it make sense to Tag him and make him do it again or lock him up long term (assuming he performs lights out like he has thus far) ?

To me, tagging a guy like Norman, after we essentially already told him - "2014's half season was good but just a half season, lets see a full season before we give you the cash" is just putting a hammer in his ass sideways. I am assuming he keeps his great play up throughout the season.

Thanks, I get that.

A hammer in the ass doesn't sound fun, sideways even worse although the claw doesn't care which direction it is. :)

Franchise him then let him walk for a comp pick after next season. He'll be on the other side of thirty with his next deal.

If he is playing at the same level at 30, it will cost the Panthers more in the long run with the increases in salary cap, a handful of young CBs moving up the franchise tag price over the next 2 years, and larger guaranteed money being handed out.

If franchised: $13.2 million for the first year. $30.0 million over 2 years. Than a contract that could be close to $15.5 million a year in 2018.

Locking him up for 5 years for $14.2 million is the better deal. This would save the Panthers a little in the short term. If you tag him for 2 years, then you have to let him walk because he would be conflicting with possible contracts for KB, Norwell, Turner, Ealy, TD, Bene, Boston, and Wegher if they all perform at the top of their position.

The Panthers will be in a very tough spot come 2018 if they do not sign Norman to a 5+ year contract in 2016.

We gave him an offer in the offseason . He turned it down and bet on himself.

(It is not like he is a RB where 30 means he is done)

The 30 year old cut off for a CB is arguably more strict than it is for RBs. He is also already on the slower side for a CB so even losing a quarter of a step could be really detrimental to his man to man defense. At that point he has to be relegated to strictly a cover 2 CB which are worth half as much as an elite man cover CB.

Norman is getting franchise tagged, and let go after next year.

Yeah thats what I believe will happen. Which is why we don't have to hurry to get a deal done. Especially if Norman wants a contract more than what Gettleman is willing to give.

I tell ya what. This really is an interesting scenario. Considering none of us know what Josh is truly thinking. Franchise him once because we can't agree on a contract, and Josh may play lights out again. But...how would he react to a second tag? Would he prefer a great deal, whether from us or not? Would that second tag piss him off?

Would really help a dude out to know what is going on in his head. Would he really stay here for a few million less on a 4 or 5 year deal? Or does he want that extra money he could get on the open market. Does he consider winning here worth more than the extra money he would get elsewhere?

Really is an interesting scenario. And to me. I would offer him a contract commensurate with his talent. Make him the highest, or there abouts, CB in the game. 4-5 years if need be. He shuts down half the damm field. Those type of players are rare. And they make our Defense that much better.

tl/dr version. If Josh wants to stay here, he and Gman will find a way to make that happen.

it would be a shitty thing to do, but we could franchise him two years in a row and pay 120% of what we paid for the first franchise tag. first year would cost around 13 million and the second would cost 15.6 million or so.

$28.6 million guaranteed over 2 years?

Damn, you're right, what a shitty thing to do... lol.
