NFL.com's Jeff Darlington: Perspective

CarolinaSunday

Recommended Posts

(I hope this hasn't been posted -- I did a search and didn't see it)

I really enjoyed this article from Jeff Darlington. He's not about to jump off the cliff and he doesn't think the Panthers should either.

That doesn't take away two key facts about the Panthers' current state: They will go down in history as the first NFC team to start a season 14-0. And everything, aside from the one-time undefeated campaign, remains intact for them.

Carolina got to this point by playing with grit and toughness and swagger like few teams we've seen before them. Regardless of what the critics wanted to say on Sunday, the Panthers don't need to be humbled or play any differently than they have to date. Must we remind those critics that Carolina is 14-1, still the NFL's best record?

Panthers should maintain perspective

My post history can vouch for the fact I gave two chits for the undefeated nonsense.  It was totally for the birds.  After 30 minutes-one hour of sadness yesterday I feel better than I felt before yesterday even happened.

Four more games folks.  Three at home, one on a neutral field.  Bring it on.

No it's not.  It's about what happens in those 60 minutes 3-4-6 weeks from now.  The Saints were 13-0 in 2009 and lost 3 in a row including one at BOA before winning it all.  Whoopdeedamdoo

I've tried really hard just to ignore you, but I can't ignore this.

Dude shut the fug up and get off this board.   You're either the worst troll ever or the biggest dumbass ever, possibly both.

Seattle was being called, "The best team in the NFL right now"  then the Rams went into coffeetown and kicked the 12th man's ass.

It happens.  We had back-to-back road games and not much (frankly) to play for.  Fans made the 16-0 important, but the players and coaches had to be thinking, "Just don't get injured."  Atlanta caught us at a good time.  We are at home this week with a reason to win.

I promise you this--I would HATE to be the Buccaneers right now.

All very good points.

Trend and trajectory (even momentum when we're talking about week-to-week) are words that the media uses to create story lines. "Who's Hot, Who's Not". This team dropped 4 spots in the power ranking...blah, blah, blah.

I'll play your game though: if you were to create a chart of this team's trajectory, it would go up 14 points and down 1.  In what world is that "trending down big time"? We're like a long-term stock. You don't pull the money when it dips one time over 14 weeks. You let it ride, because it's shown you that over time it's consistently successful and will pay off in the end (more times than not).

Earlier this season, we went through losing Luke for, at the time of his injury, an unknown amount of time. That felt like a loss. What did we do? Well, we figured out a plan and we executed. Then, we took on the "Gauntlet" of our schedule. Where we said if we could just win 1 or 2 of those games, we'd be happy. Who'd we play? Seattle (WIN - playoff team), Eagles (WIN) Indy (WIN - had Luck, did Luck things), Packers (WIN - survived Rodgers getting his groove back). I say that to say this, in that stretch we beat 2 teams in which we might very well face again. This team is fine. When we don't have to worry about health, or saving players, or don't run Cam...when all we have to do is win the game we are playing and throw EVERY punch we have, we'll be alright because that's who we are and that's when this team plays best.

Please cheer for another team.  Or just stop posting.  We all know the season is over for you.  If this is how you freak out about one loss, I'd hate to see how you handle negative things that happen in your life that actually matter.

Agreed.  The last thing we need to see is him crying about the team in every thread and making posts about the season being over. Worst fan I've ever seen in my life

    • So how about the Mondays after we lose? Because those Mondays after the Jags, Pats, and Bills games better have been run suicides until your legs fall off...
    • Saints trade WR Shaheed to Seahawks Seahawks get: WR Rashid Shaheed Saints get: 2026 fourth-round pick, 2026 fifth-round pick Seahawks' grade: A- Saints' grade: B+ One of the NFL's hottest passing teams just got better. The Seahawks currently rank third in EPA per dropback (0.25) and first in success rate on dropbacks (53%). And now they are adding Shaheed in a move that makes sense both on the field and in terms of where the Seahawks are as a franchise. Shaheed, 27, is averaging 1.8 yards per route run this season. But I think that sells him short because that number is down a bit from his career average entering this year (2.0) and he's been playing a role that includes running fewer vertical routes (34%) compared to last year (44%). Shaheed also has consistently posted above-average open scores in ESPN's receiver score metrics, including a 63 this season that ranks 28th among wide receivers. As a complement to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, I expect Shaheed will run downfield more often and be a bigger threat in that role than rookie Tory Horton was. When Cooper Kupp returns, he and Shaheed will make for a nice pair of secondary threats behind one of the best receivers in the league in Smith-Njigba. This is the time to strike for the Seahawks. FPI gives Seattle an 84% chance to make the playoffs and a 5% shot at winning the Super Bowl. This addition helps boost their chances without mortgaging their future the way the Colts did in the Sauce Gardner trade. Shaheed is a pending free agent but given the leverage of the moment for the Seahawks and their need I think they ought to be plenty willing to pay the cost. Shaheed is young enough to where if Seattle doesn't retain him he should sign a free agent contract that would yield Seattle a compensatory pick -- if the Seahawks don't nullify that pick with signings of their own. Because the Seahawks currently have $79 million in cap space next year, per OverTheCap, getting that compensatory pick is not guaranteed. The Saints are not rolling in cap space the way the Seahawks are -- and thus would land a compensatory pick for Shaheed -- but they got more draft capital this way than they otherwise would have. Considering New Orleans' 1-8 record, this should have been an easy decision.
