Thanks for this PhillyB! Being closer to the beach would be nice as well ( like Greensboro is). My wife and I aren't big city people (as in NYC / Philadelphia-ish). I've only been to Charlotte twice and the last time was about 14 years ago. Small cities, however, we can do as long as it's not crazy to navigate traffic.

Again, thanks a ton for the suggestions & reasoning!

Sounds like Lake Norman to me or Mountain Island Lake area you get the best of both worlds and close to Charlotte and surrounding

Alot of things to consider. Are you buying a home and/or land? are you raising children or will be in the future? Are you more interested in historical sites and/or ease of access to such? Are you basing your decision on the job market, and if so...what sectors?

The Raleigh/Durham area (which is more of less Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and all of its surrounding smaller cities) is consistently ranked as one of the best places in the whole country to live. Not to say Charlotte is not diverse because it is, but the RD area offers a much wider variety in terms of social climate. Outside of Charlotte, you are in the boonies and in places only locals have ever heard of. Ask any of your friends up in PA if they have ever heard of " Gastonia"..lol. Ask the same friends if they have heard of the Research Triangle Park.

Its the capitol area for a reason. Charlotte is great and all,but pales in comparison to the type of diversity the greater Raleigh area offers. I don't mean bar scenes and fancy restaurants...I am referring to the greater diversity of ethnic and international peoples in many areas of expertise aside from banking and finance.

The choice really depends on what you want in the present, and what you want to grow in the future. In either  case however, the Raleigh area beats Charlotte hands down in everything other than being close to the home games and tailgates.

One day, I'm going to work at a tv station in NC so I can come "home."  One day...(or production company, not picky, but as I gather it there's very little in the area for that.)

Shoot, we can just start our own. I have plans to move down there and get something going. The market isn't flooded like it is up in NYC/CT.

I'd say Western Carolina up in the Blue Ridge if you hike, fish, love the outdoors. Asheville has some work opportunities if you are in the medical field, hospitality, or tourism field. Although my friends would tell me to shutup....we have enough folks relocating here already.

Honestly, I would suggest Cary, NC. It's very close to the Research Triangle area and you are nestled between some of the nation's top schools if your wife wants to pursue her doctorate. Home prices are still reasonable there and it is in a long-term growth situation. If you want a good look at the homes/neighborhoods in the area, watch Love It Or List It on HGTV as they are currently filming the show in that area.

I live in the Greensboro area, but growth is tepid here at the moment.

    • I pay it no mind I am what people would deride as xenophobic.  Meaning I preferred what we were doing in America and thought we had about the best sports and music. Actually we did.  I saw soccer as inferior and as the game of heathens to be honest, some of those third world countries were all about it. They’re all rioting and fighting and I even remember Saddam Hussein was said to have had players executed for not playing well. You can keep that lol.  Bring it back to the Panthers, XL you better tighten it up. Tepper will put it on you .  We have the best sports and music I’ll just say it again. I hate to see youths losing interest in football and baseball. sorry back to the Panthers
    • I think anyone around here at this point is truly a fan (or masochist) and yet another disappointing season doesn’t matter. Where’s that converted Jets fan lol…wonder if this is worse or better. But I remember when this joint first started (third username) and it was much busier. Even when places like Reddit started taking over in place of forums. My newish girl didn’t have a NFL team but liked college football and loves watching. Last year I got Her a Panther shirt she wears on game days. She was excited. But I’ll be damned it’s near impossible to get anyone to be a fan of this team, she says now they just aren’t exciting despite still watching with me and wearing her shirt. Tepper is just pure poo.
    • Oh man I didn't know Dalton finished up the game in garbage time and got that last 7 points lol. Watching the replay I know backups were in but that resembled something closer to actual NFL football than the first 3 and a half quarters.
