Panthers plan to Tag Josh Norman

In all honesty it really IS in Josh's best interest to play ball and find a middle ground with Gettleman. We have all discussed it ad nauseum but the reality is that we will just tag him once or twice, use up a sizeable chunk of the good years he has left, and then let him go to some team willing to over pay for a past their prime CB with a short shelf life. The price tag wont be nearly as nice then as it is now either. I think we see a deal for something in the 9-10 mil a year range and hopefully no more than 3-4 years. Anything more and we are setting ourselves up for disaster and cap issues. Star and Short are my biggest priorities though because that DL is YOUNG and very very talented. A new CB can be found easier and cheaper than dominant interior linemen.

Getting franchised isn't a bad thing unless the next year you tank or get injured otherwise he'll get the money he would have wanted in a long term deal but just for a year

After 2016 season and if Norman has another stout year I can see him signing a 3 or 4 year deal, probably 3 is what will be offered but Josh may want more than 3

The tag part doesn't surprise me. Keep him for one more year to find a replacement the same way they did with Hardy. The fact that the team is seeking a long term deal does surprise me. Don't get me wrong, I love josh, but he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league. Someone will make him that. I'm surprised gettleman would be willing to invest so much in a corner. It seems to be contrary to how he wants to build his team.

That being said, I'm not questioning anything gettleman does.
