2016 Top NFL free agents - running backs

Of all the positions I think we need to address, RB in FA is not one. RB in the draft. Get your mileage out of them while they're young and cheap. Let someone else pay for them on their downward spiral. Any other position I would be fine with in FA.

It would be fun to do some shopping this year but.

Stewart:

8/11/2012: Signed a six-year, $37.811 million contract. The deal contains $22.5 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus. Another $6 million is available through incentives based on 1,200-yard rushing seasons and 1,600 all-purpose yard seasons. 2016: $5 million (+ $750,000 workout bonus), 2017: $5.5 million (+ $750,000 workout bonus), 2018: $1 million, 2019: Free Agent

About a 7.25 million cap hit next year?

Johnson:

7/29/2011: Signed a six-year, $76 million contract. The deal contains $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus. Johnson is eligible for an annual $250,000 workout bonus in years two through six. 2016: $10.75 million, 2017: Free Agent

About a 16 million dollar hit?

What can we do to lower or especially in Johnson's case eliminate it?

Johnson is getting cut, or taking an outright paycut...we'll be clearing 11 million from a cut of CJ.  Stew is trickier. If he's played his way into staying, he makes his money.  Or, he's a June 1st cut, save around 4 million IIRC. Which could be enough to sign an Alfred Morris perhaps.

I ran some numbers on probable cut players a few weeks ago, and we can end up with around 35-40 million in space, while keeping Kalil (another big cap hit) and Stewart's numbers as they are I believe.

Forte is actually intriguing as a receiving option but I wouldn't see the point in having him get many carries when we have Stew on the roster.

Lamar Miller is obviously a good player but someone is gonna pay him and we aren't going to pay anyone except our own guys.

    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
    • It was always a matter of time with Cam’s playing style and a shorter shelf life than passers that protect themselves. I suppose Cam could have still been playing in 2028 ten years after the hit took place, but he would need to have evolved as a quarterback and become more of a passer than the dual threat maestro he was. It’s sad because it makes us think of what could have been, but I do feel it was always a matter of time until all the hits took their toll.
