2016 Schedule Notes

Mock schedule version 1.0: (yeah, I might do this again. so what?)

MockSchedule1.0.png

We've known for a while who we're playing. We'll know for sure when we play everyone in about two months. Here's a couple of things to keep in mind while we wait:

  • Good chance we'll play Denver within the first three weeks. Schedulers wouldn't want to risk the ratings this will draw on a potential poor record by either team. However, I wouldn't bet that this will be on opening night.
    • The opening game is guaranteed to draw big numbers, as is the Super Bowl rematch. Why have these on the same night?
    • Doubt FOX will want to give up this game, but it's not solely up to them. They only have two on their schedule with the defending champs. (CAR @ DEN, ATL @ DEN)
      • They way I understand it, the networks can only give a wishlist of games they don't want to lose before the schedule is made in the spring. Flex scheduling/protecting is different.
        • Carolina at Denver will only be the sixth regular season Super Bowl rematch in league history
        • In 2014, in the first regular season Super Bowl rematch since 1997, Denver traveled to Seattle in Week 3. 4pm EDT game on CBS. (Denver lost.)
          • So they only time the league ever had the chance to have an opening night Super Bowl rematch, they passed.
    • Denver will open at home on TNF on NBC on 9/8
    • I'd put us in Denver on FOX at 4pm in Week 2 or 3
  • ACC Championship is Saturday Dec 3
    • Carolina will be on the road Week 13
  • SEC Championship is Saturday Dec 3
    • Atlanta traditionally on the road this weekend
      • Expect ATL on the road somewhere for Week 13
  • R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is likely Dec 18
    • Unless it's a Thursday game, we won't be at NO in Week 15
  • AFR Celebration Bowl at Georgia Dome
    • Only in its second year
      • Week 15 in 2015
        • Bet on Atlanta being on the road in Week 15 this year
  • Late Season Bowl Games
    • Belk Bowl is Dec 30 (could this get moved?)
    • Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl is Dec 31
    • Outback Bowl is traditionally Jan 1
    • Sugar Bowl is Monday, Jan 2
      • Hard to say what will happen for sure, but I'd put my money on being at NO or at ATL on Sunday 1/1 in Week 17
  • 29 teams can play a max of five primetime games; 3 can play a max of six primetime games
    • We'll probably get five. I can't see us (in 2016) cracking that exclusive six-game group that will undoubtedly have the Patriots, Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, Giants, Colts, or Broncos
    • Strong candidate games for primetime:
      • vs Arizona (probably the best candidate for a home game on SNF)
      • at Seattle
      • vs Minnesota
      • at Washington
      • vs Kansas City
        • Any division game is a possibility, too. Especially for TNF.
          • 13/14 TNF games that were actually played on a Thursday in 2015 were division matchups. In 2014, it was 12/13.

Additional notes as they're announced, in case you're prepping a schedule prediction:

  • We won't play in Oakland on the following dates, due to A's games:
    • Sunday 9/11 (Week 1)
    • Sunday 9/25 (Week 3)
  • We probably won't play in LA on the following dates, due to USC games the day before:
    • Sunday 9/11
    • Sunday 10/2
    • Sunday 10/9
    • Sunday 10/28
    • Sunday 11/6
    • Sunday 11/27
  • We probably won't play in Tampa on the following dates, due to USF games the day before:
    • Sunday 9/11
    • Sunday 9/25
    • Sunday 10/9
    • Sunday 10/16
    • Sunday 10/29
  • We probably won't play in Washington Week 3. FedEx Field hosts a CFB game on Saturday, September 24.
  • We won't play in LA in Week 7. The Rams host the Giants in London that week.
  • We won't play Sunday afternoon in Seattle in Week 7. Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake at 1pm PST on Sunday October, 23.
    • MNF? Possibly, but doubtful that game would make it to MNF; ratings would be too can't miss for cable
  • We probably won't play the Rams in Week 8. Teams historically have their bye the week following their London game.
  • We won't play in Washington in Week 8. The Redskins play the Bengals in London that week.
  • We probably won't play Washington in Week 9. Teams historically have their bye the week following their London game.
  • We won't play in Oakland in Week 11. The Raiders play the Texans in Mexico City on 11/21.
  • We probably won't play Washington in Week 12. The Redskins are rumored to be playing Dallas on Thanksgiving.
  • We probably won't play Minnesota in Week 12. The Vikings are rumored to be playing Detroit on Thanksgiving.

Seattle and Arizona will most likely be primetime snf games. I could see us opening on Sunday night in Seattle.

Denver will be a fox national game.

Kansas City seems like a perfect Monday night game.

Tampa will probably be our Thursday night game.

Seattle in the opener would be ideal.  Would take out a mid season west coast trip and we'd also be playing them without Jimmy Graham, who likely won't be available until mid-season.

Denver early is also ideal, there'd be no freezing cold games this year.

I like prime time games but don't always love.  I don't want Arizona in prime time.  I want every west coast team at 1 pm est to turn the screws on every advantage, perceived or not.

If we do get Tampa on Thursday it needs to be at home.  After going there in 2013.

I don't like finishing the season on the road.  F U Belk Bowl.  Ever since 2005 when we had to play @ATL, @NYG, @CHI before being exhausted @SEA I've noticed the advantage of finishing and staying at home.

I'd be surprised if we see Prime Time 5 or 6 games. #norespect

Edit: I can't wait to Riot when the Panthers come to play the Rams in LA. It's gonna be good.

Some buddies and i at work are already gameplanning for this. Might fly to Vegas and drive to LA. Not sure yet.
