I still know a couple people...what happened with josh

The main thing to keep in mind is josh didn't want to play anywhere but Carolina. However, he also wanted to be paid.

His agent preached hardball, telling him "this is how the game is played." He was presented tons of similar instances (drew brees being the prime example) of how these holdouts always end well for the player.

At no point was josh trying to get out of Carolina. Gettleman just wasn't interested in play Josh's agent's game.

Additionally the panthers do not think as highly of josh as josh thinks of himself, and that because of the schedule they don't really feel he's integral, which I don't understand.

At this point, josh would have to take even less than he was offered originally to come to Carolina, or a short two year deal.

Josh is now torn between his last paycheck or staying at a place that has basically treated him like a son since he was drafted.

thomas Davis, Charles Johnson and Roman Harper (wtf) are telling him to take less money on a one year deal to take another run at the super bowl.

gettleman basically just sent a message to every single agent and player in the league, and every employee is updating their resume lol

holy crap man

Makes sense.  I'm not sure though that Gettleman really sent a message to everyone with this one.  I think it just confirms what I've suspected for awhile now.  Gettleman isn't going to spend big bucks in the secondary.  We're gonna spend our money on D on the front seven and look for bargain players who got our system in the secondary.

I don't think Dave Gettleman is making such a crazy move that everyone is updating their resume and putting everyone on notice. This has been done before, and will be done again (rescinding the tag). You almost have to look at this like asking a player to take a paycut. If they say no, your only option as an organization is to cut that player. They reportedly offered Josh several contracts and were at a place where they new they would not get a deal done. Josh saw it as accepting a paycut, so they cut ties.

This stuff happens every off season, just a little different with the tag and different because he is such a high profile player. I think agents and players understand the dynamics and it is only surprising to media and fans because we do not see the business side like players and front offices.

^^Bingo.  Hasn't everyone figured this out about Gman yet?

Who tf was his previous agent anyways, literally no one had ever heard of the guy.

Someone said he's only negotiated 6 contracts and they were all NBA players. Where 1 player makes a team.

Sure it does! It says we won't play hardball.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it, although I think we have enough 4th line grinders right now between Carrier Robinson and Janakowski  down there, i actually really love our 4th line.            We need scoring in the top 6, and a RHD at this point its definitely coming via trade.            Rasmus Andersson I hear may be on the market, it feels like every couple of seasons someone links us to Erik Karlsson.       As far as centers go,  Marco Rossi (even though we have a ton of smurf already)     Jordan Kyrou is an intriguing option if he is available.           At this point i think Rod should just move Jarvis to his natural center position to give us a 1B center...   yes hes also a smurf but he plays way bigger than he is stylistically.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
