Delaire working on new moves

Short article by Joe Person: Delaire seeks to add moves, power

From the article:

Quote

Delaire had two sacks in his Panthers debut at Tampa Bay last October after Carolina signed him from Washington’s practice squad after injuries at the position. But Delaire’s sack numbers fell off precipitously -- as Panthers coach Ron Rivera predicted -- after opposing offensive linemen studied tape of Delaire.

...

Delaire, 24, undrafted out of Towson in 2014, knows he needs more than a speed rush to be successful in the NFL.

“I’ve been working on trying to get more than just one move,” Delaire said. “This year I’m trying to incorporate more power into my game.”

I find it interesting that Rivera knew Delaire would be limited last season, but still saw enough potential in him that he wanted to keep him around.

I saw enough in that one game to know that I wanted to see more. Honestly, after that it was hard to keep my expectations in check, until he disappeared off the map. Now I know why. I hope he is successful.

The fact is, I believe that whoever can add to their repertoire the quickest between Delaire and Cox--- with good result---will have the best shot at a long term career with the Panthers. Maybe they will even be the third guy on the totem pole.

What was the OLB/DE, that came over in Ron's rookie coaching year from San Diego (pauses to look him up) Antwan Applewhite (6'3 270) reminds me a lot for Delaire who is actually a bit bigger, but lighter (6'4 254) iirc he was also a speed rusher but never stuck I'm not sure why, only three sacks in two seasons for us.

Delaire:

WEAKNESSES -

Lacks awareness at times. Gets fooled by playaction and spends too much time playing man in front of him rather than finding ball. Pass rush get-off stymied by noticeable false step at snap. Needs a pass-rush counter move.

I think his playing time dropped a lot more "precipitously" than his numbers.  Did opponents even have time to watch tape?  He was inactive for a bunch of games midseason.  Josh Norman's numbers dropped after setting the world on fire in first four games but he stayed out there.

Jared Allen is what happened to Delaire.  The coaches liked Allen's line play in their scheme more than they liked Delaire.  Which I can see but thought we'd see more of him at end of season.

Not saying he should start but that speed off the edge is in short supply.  If he can do that while still handling what the coaches expect more PT should equal more numbers.

love the potential. out of all of our developing DEs he seems to have the most athleticism and physical capabilities. from interviews with him he also seems to be a thoughtful, intelligent person capable of learning and growing into our system.

i loved the mean streak he showed. he almost took off Winston's head that first game. he just needs control over technique and the mental side of the game that'll come with time and he'll become a heatseeking missile.

He's another player going into his second year. Like Zod has said, it's hard to evaluate D-linemen without pads, so I'll be waiting for word from Wofford about his development. With CJ and Addison being UFAs and Kony entering the last year of his contract next year, Delaire's development is crucial for the 2017 roster.

This is just another sign of a major change in how our team operates.

A good season can happen because you grab a couple of star free agents and use that to leverage the handful of good players you have on your team. You see this continuously happening in places like Dallas, Washington, Chicago or Miami. They might hit magic and have a strong playoff team in any given year. They also have long droughts without playoffs and never seem to put together anything that lasts.

And then you have teams that are consistently competitive. The Patriots (hate 'em), Packers, Steelers... those teams operate differently. They don't make big free agency splashes, but develop players instead. They lose some good players over time to free agency, but they develop others to follow on.

We were never very successful at the first type, but we sure as heck look like the second type now. Patience and good, solid talent scouting are becoming the hallmarks of this team. Coaching, across almost the entire team (let's not talk about special teams too much here) has vastly improved. These aren't coaches that are just installing a scheme, but are actually teaching players and bringing them from the bench to the playing field. JAGs here become journeyman players, journeymen become solid starters. And I'd dare say that we've turned a few solid starters into perennial Pro Bowl players.

I hope Delaire keeps on improving. He looked good when he was turned out against his old teammates, and who knows what an extra year of coaching will create in him.

I think Cox and DeLaire both have a lot of potential. That being said, CJ has already proven that he is not a hot commodity on the free market, and after this season, he'll only be a year older. Unless he has a stellar year (plz, plz, plz) there's no reason to think he wouldn't sign another low budget, short term contract if we offer. He has value as a team leader and still has a lot of football left in him. Addison is a situational pass rusher, so he shouldn't be pricey either.

I think this DE group is going to pull the same trick our receivers did last season and the legion of whom did a few seasons ago...surprise everyone that panicked in the off season by dominating come game time.
