Falcons release Hester (Hester happy to get away from Meg Ryan)

The problem is that with the exception of Ray Guy there are no strictly special teamers in the Hall of Fame. Most guys in the Hall of Fame as great punt returners also starred as a receiver or other position. So if he gets in he will only be the second to get in a special teamer. So it is likely an uphill battle and he won't be a lock at all.

Guy is the only punter, but there are 3 kickers (Blanda, Groza, Stenerud) in as well. The bigger hurdles might be that there are no returners and/or no modern-era STers, and with the de-emphasis on punt and kick returning he'll probably get passed over by the time he's eligible even though he's arguably the best returner and definitely the best return specialist.

If you was the best ever at your position in the NFL, you should be in the HoF.

that was my initial thought, but then again, he was only a kick returner because he sucked as a WR

If Steve Smith only returned kicks, he'd probably be Devin Hester.

Maybe, maybe not, all we can go on is the facts.   The NFL is a team game, I don't think it's fair to downplay his importance, especially when he could (and often did ) change the game in one play.   Field position is pretty big and when you have a guy like Hester that always got you great position and big plays, you can't downplay that.

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
