What 49ers Fans Are Saying

The 49ers are faced with a short week and an east coast trip to play the Carolina Panthers. As it turns out, the 49ers were in a similar position last year, and it didn’t end well for them.

“Last year, the 49ers opened up 2015 with an impressive 20-3 win on Monday Night Football over the Minnesota Vikings. And yet the short-rested Niners had to travel east to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were also well rested after debuting the previous Thursday night. Those results weren’t pretty. The Steelers dominated the Niners 43-18.”

I wasn’t aware of this, and it makes me feel a bit better about the game on Sunday. Call me crazy, but I prefer the Carolina Panthers not be 14 point favorites.

From the same article, some San Francisco fans would be happy with a moral victory?

“The NFL isn’t a moral-victory league. And yet the 49ers could easily achieve one here. Even if San Francisco loses — and it’s impossible to bet they won’t — keeping pace with the mighty Panthers would be yet another step in the right direction.”

I have to admit, seeing the Carolina Panthers held up as the gold standard isn’t something I am quite used to yet. However, I am so happy the Carolina Panthers have not had to worry about moral victories for many seasons, aren’t you?

From 49erswebzone.com , a fan community for the 49ers

On Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera falling asleep during the 49ers boring Monday Night Football Game

“rivera fell asleep? time to wake this geriatric f**k up on sunday then”

Ron Rivera was a NFL linebacker that comes from a military family. I long for the day some rowdy fan gets in Ron Rivera’s face on. I imagine Ron treating the doughy fan’s painted face as his personal stress relief ball. Squeezing and contorting it into various shapes as the crowd cheers.

On the Panthers-Broncos game

“Well the Panthers got dominated by the Broncos so if we had a updated picture the 49ers would look like we are the far better team”

Apparently losing by a last second field goal is being “dominated” by 49ers fans standards. To be fair, this has been the only way they can squeak out a victory for the past few seasons. Don’t be angry at them, they don’t know any better.

On who will cover Kelvin Benjamin

“Kelvins gonna get his in this game. I am starting to think we match up pretty well against them. Ray Ray will have to play huge cause Olsen is the primary threat to shut down. I expect Robinson on Benjamin in Nickle. Ward on Ginn. Brock on Funchess. Should be a much better game than what Vegas thinks.”

Wait, Robinson on Benjamin? 4th round rookie Rashard Robinson will cover Kelvin Benjamin? Rashard Robinson, who has not been targeted a single time in the NFL? Covering Kelvin Benjamin? I am sure the Carolina Panthers would love to see that happen.

Again with the moral victories?

“I don’t think we really have a chance in this one…what I am hoping for is to give them hell and make it competitive. I am not big on moral victories…but this is most definitely a game where that is all I am asking for. It is just too soon in the process to expect more than that.”

Cut it out. I am starting to feel sorry for this fan base.

On the Carolina Panthers offense

“CAROLINA’s offense is so simple that if we dont get caught up to CAMERON’s size and athletecism, we shouldn’t have any problem containing them… CAM looks for Olsen 75% of the time, so please, no TANK on Olsen !!!”

And there it is, the “coup de grace” of 49ers fan talk for this week. Carolina’s offense is a lot of things, but simple isn’t one of them. The air coryell offensive system Mike Shula has put in place can be inefficient at times, mainly due to its complexity. Still, it is the offense that managed to score the most points in the entire NFL last season.

LOL....we got dominated by the Broncos.  We lead for the first 3 quarters of the game and then hit the game winning field goal (time out was called) but missed the second attempt at it.  Refs let Denver get back into that game in the 2nd half, nothing more, nothing less.

I read through that thread.   Most of them seem to fall in the moral victory category.  Given the state that roster is in, and the travel and short turn around time, I guess that's reasonable.  Carlos Hyde could be a factor if we struggle to score and the run D is still shaky.  Their defense is fast but not sure what to really think since the rams were clearly garbage.   I don't like the ridiculous Vegas spread but we should be able to win this one handily.

One of their own posters corrected that person with pretty much this exact response

I tried too. The site made my eyes bleed.

I'm just going to leave this here, so any visiting fans can correct their definition of "dominated", just in case they still think the Broncos "dominated" us this past game:

"the company dominates the market for operating system software"

    informalhead up, be in the driver's seat, be at the helm of, rule the roost (in), wear the pants (in), have someone in one's hip pocket;
    literarysway
"the Romans dominated the parts of Britain that became England and Wales"
    predominate, prevail, reign, be prevalent, be paramount, be preeminent;
    informalkick butt
    "it dominates the sports scene"
    • be the most important or conspicuous person or thing in.
"the race was dominated by the 1992 champion"
    • (of something tall or high) have a commanding position over; overlook.

Honestly, no one should sleep on this game. On paper, should we blow them out, of course. But, you don't know the bullshit that's going to happen on game day. This game will either be 44-6, or 30-27. I see us winning either way, but it probably won't be a squash match, which might not be bad. Maybe the media will take us off the pedestials at that point.

    • Just because all draft picks are a gamble doesn't mean you don't have a better chance at hitting on a better player the higher you're drafting. It would literally be like someone saying, I'll give you 1 or 2 free spins on a slot machine, and you say you'll take the 1 because you're not likely to win anything anyways with 1 or 2, so why bother? The Cowboys desperately wanted T-Mac, but because they were 4 picks behind us, they weren't able to get him.  If you told Cowboys fans that had they lost 2 more games last year in a lost season, that it would get them the player they wanted so badly, would they in retrospect go back and lose those games to get their guy? 95% of them would take that trade off in a heartbeat, and the others who wouldn't are the fans who would rather enjoy an extra win or two in a poo season to then set themselves up to be better for the next decade. I also think the fans who argue against this thinking, get too caught up in the "well that means you're going to be rooting against us late in the season even if we still have a shot at the playoffs." Which isn't true, it's saying if you're telling me right now we'd make the playoffs but lose in the first round, that I'd rather end up 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss the playoffs because in our opinion, the benefits that come along with that outweigh the benefit of the players getting 1 game of playoff experience.
    • In relation to tanking. I think you can count on one hand the number of people here who actually want us to lose football games. When accounting for it across the fanbase it amounts to maybe 2% of the entire Panthers fanbase. But you engage with some internet trolls and think haters are coming out of the woodwork and hey look at that it's all a conspiracy that leads to Bryce Young haters. Do you hear yourself sir? If it sounds ridiculous that's because it is. I mean at this point do you see Bryce haters in your dreams? As far as the culture of this franchise goes we seem to be doing better in that department via what we are building right now and with the people we have in place. But we also shouldn't just make assumptions just yet either. The rubber still needs to meet the road. And going back to previous seasons I think we can acknowledge although tanking obviously isn't a thing there were some times where we thought our culture was improving but really it wasn't. Yes I'm looking directly at some of those wins under Wilks. If the culture had truly changed we would not have lost to the Steelers who have been mediocre for years at home the way we did and they were starting Mitch Trubisky ffs. We did not change our culture for the better and we won games that ultimately meant nothing. It was just a brief mirage. We've done this for years now. The harsh truth of the matter is the Panthers have not had a winning season or been to the playoffs in going on 8 years but in those years they've been trying to convince themselves they aren't poo but in the process all they've done throughout most of that time period is squander better draft position and we were still the worst team in the league for our troubles. At the end of the day we should be able to just be adults and reconcile with that. And no that isn't being "pro tank" or any other boogeyman term it's simply recognizing reality.
    • He's an asset in a game manager role. But as soon as you have to ask him to go out there and try to make plays and not just take what the defense is giving him... well, Darnolding happens.
