Looks like it might be headed my way - as a possible direct hit.  As a guy who had the eyes of  Bertha and  Fran ( 96 ) Bonnie in 98, and Floyd ( 99 ) pass right over me i know a thing or two about tropical cyclones.  I do not have a real good feeling about what we might be facing with this one. Been almost 2 decades without a major hit in this area ( SE NC ) and people forget how devastating they can be.  There isnt a damn thing to "hurricane party" about when you might be facing 10 days without electrical power or having a tree land on your home or the wind devastating  the forest timber that you are counting on for a decent retirement income.  Or Maybe I am just getting too old for this poo and need to find a mountain retreat.

My dad just had open heart surgery in Charleston.  They just sewed him up around 3pm and now they are evacuating the entire coast.  You can't make this stuff up.  Let's pray this thing goes out to sea.

I've been through Fran, Floyd, and Isabel further inland. Only experienced flooding and tropical storm forced winds. Never experienced a hurricane this close to the coast.

I lived about 1 mile from the ocean front and a stones throw from one of the major tidal creeks when I was in Wilmington.  Me and the old woman rode out Floyd in my shop with 3 sedated dogs - .  The storm was huge and seemed to go on forever.  As the eye passed over us we woke the dogs up and took them out into about 4 inches of water to use the bathroom while we had the chance.  When we got back inside I remember George Elliot one of the local weather guys telling some very frightened college girls not to worry because the backside of the storm was weaker.    About that time the wind picked back up 180 degrees different direction from where it had been and branches and pinecones starting pelting my shop - the wind was stronger and it was some scary poo after an already long night  - every couple minutes you could hear a huge CRACK as a pine broke in two and you would hear a loud thud and the floor under our feet would literally shake as it hit the ground. For us the backside of that storm was worse than the front side.

 

Moral of my long winded story - don't believe a damn thing the forcaster " experts " tell you.  Prepare for the worst and dont get lulled into thinking the worst is over.

I live pretty much dead center of the city. Looks like we're going to take this thing head on.

Floyd just sat there and poured rain. Water was over the outlets in my house. Hopefully this one moves faster.

After Diana, I had pictures of ice coolers that were on the docks at Bradley Creek Marina floating down the waterway. And if you go down Airlie Road, where it turns at the waterway, there's a big house on the hill. There were 40 foot boats up at that house.

The media here in Charleston did it's job this fugin city is going crazy.  This storm won't be here till late Friday and businesses have closed you can't get water and gas. This storm will be like all the others and barely cause any damage and the economy will take a major hit.  I came home all of our poo  is packed my ol lady is trippin.

Be careful for those that are in the path of the storm. Try to find somewhere safe and sound. Whether home or in a shelter. Or a basement. Hope it will be passing on through.

I can understand your frustration with people and businesses being silly, but  I remember a storm called Hugo passing through your way about 27 years ago and it caused some MAJOR damage. Of course you may be too young to remember such ancient history.

My in-laws at Ocean Isle Beach said they are staying. My wife/their daughter is telling them to just drive to Charlotte and spend the weekend in a hotel. They're in their 70's and travel all over the place but want to stay for a storm...

Hopefully, the high pressure over the mid-west continues to move east and push this thing further out to sea. I'm currently in the 5" rain band and that much water in the Tar River will cause problems.
