Geoff Schwatz provides context on why Bene was cut.

If it's an issue of being out of shape, that's one thing.

But if they cut him because he said he was gassed, that's seems petty. Trying to contain Julie Jones isn't exactly a cocktail party. Our whole team looked to be just going through the motions at times against Atlanta.

Being gassed is a poor excuse when you do this job for a living. My seventeen year old plays soccer and runs hard for 90 minutes straight and says he isn't tired and would play every second of every minute. Just for the record, he plays striker and his nickname is maddog because he is relentless. Don't tell me a guy in his early 20s making hundred of thousands of dollars shouldn"t be in shape. What do you think most of his rehab was? Strength building and conditioning. If he was cut you can bet his conditioning has been an issue for some time. Maybe he will clear waivers and go back on the practice squad.

Totally incomparable. The margin of error is tiny in the NFL.  Nonexistent vs. a WR the caliber of Julio. "Not tired" to a kid is different than an NFL player being even a half a step slow because he's winded.

gassed? yes, that's awful.

gassed because he was out of shape and didn't take conditioning seriously? ehh, fug it, cut him. he's not going to recondition to an nfl level in a couple weeks, and it's hard to imagine sanchez also allowing 300 yards to julio jones and giving up on plays.

there will be no tangible dropoff in performance and this also lights a fire under everybody's asses going into a must-win game. now that i'm over the shock of it it's actually starting to make sense.

We cut a starter with like 13 guys on the injury report

For those that are interested, Bene did his usual in studio weekly interview with WFNZ a couple of days ago and discussed what happened with Julio. He was very candid and admitted that he has been out of shape. Pretty sure this is what Geoff Schwartz is referring to. Link to the interview is below.

Not to jump to conclusions but it is odd that Jordan Gross used to be a regular on WFNZ and was reportedly "pushed out", Steve Smith used to co-host on WFNZ and was cut, Norman gave interviews all the time and is gone, now Bene. Like I said, not to jump to conclusions but that is a bit of a pattern.

Wasn't the reason we sent Sanchez down to the practice squad in the first place because he needed to bulk up? I think he can make plays for us as far as interceptions, but people are definitely going to have to be patient with him.

Look, if we cut him for being out of shape and lack of effort to motivate other guys, fine. If such as the case. We need to continue setting examples, starting with our OL. My concern with Ron is and always has been his blinders he has on for certain players over others. We'll see how it plays out.

that's the only thing that really befuddles me at this point. i don't see why you don't do it the monday after the loss to give sanchez all week to prepare, or just give sanchez the reps monday night and cut bene on tuesday.

i can see how cutting him now if you're going to cut him anyway does make more sense though because it has the added benefit of waking everybody the fug up. i guarantee you there will be zero loafing monday night. and if we roll that into a convincing win it may just snap the team out of the malaise it's been mired in

Of course it is comparable. We aren't talking skill, we are talking conditioning and heart. And saying you are gassed is a poor excuse for anything. The receiver is just as tired as you are. It is about heart and desire and imposing your will on the opponent.  Why do some guys run fast even when they are tired and other players dog it. Everyone has the ability at this level but not everyone has the desire to be great. If you watched the game you would see that there was a lot more wrong than he was tired. Poor angles, biting on double moves, etc. They likely were hoping he was recover but realize he is not the player he was last year.

yeah he was a little ass dude. i honestly would feel more comfortable with him playing in the slot and kicking mcclain out wide (where he played after tillman went down, iirc) but i guess he's shown something in practice.

Dave is old school.  Had this been 20 years ago they'd be at the bottom of the Hudson.  You don't talk outside the family..

    • My projection. I think at WR its time to go with youth. This means Moore should be the odd man out. Horn can return both punts and kicks and Tremayne is a better WR than Moore. XL gets one more year to prove himself, although I could see a trade in the future which would mean Moore could stay. For OL, I would like us to bring back Brady if we can. The RBs, Trevor can return both punts and kicks too. With the uncertainty of Brooks and Dillon, its hard to choose either one. I think the team would like for Brooks to have a breakout season to clear any uncertainty that he deserves a spot. For now, I have them both even and on the team. DL looks solid as well as OLB. Watch out for the UDFA of Aaron Hall and Isaiah Smith at OLB. They look promising and could knock someone off the team. ILB is still the biggest weakness on the team. We need to upgrade that any means necessary. CB is strong and Im praying to all the Gods that Wheatley beats out Scott at FS.  OFFENSE: WR: Tetairoa McMillan - *Chris Brazzell II* - Brycen Tremayne TE: Tommy Tremble - James Mitchell LT: #Rasheed Walker# - *Monroe Freeling* LG: Damien Lewis C- #Luke Fortner# - *Sam Hecht* RG: Robert Hunt - #Saahdiq Charles# RT: Taylor Moton - #Stone Forsythe# TE: Ja`Tavion Sanders - Mitchell Evans WR: Xavier Legette - Jalen Coker - Jimmy Horn Jr. QB: Bryce Young - #Kenny Pickett# RB: Chuba Hubbard - Trevor Etienne - #AJ Dillon# - Jonathon Brooks DEFENSE: LE: Tershawn Wharton - Bobby Brown III  NT: *Lee Hunter* - Cam Jackson RE: Derrick Brown - LaBryan Ray LOLB: Nic Scourton - Patrick Jones II  LILB: Trevin Wallace - Bam Martin-Scott - *Jackson Kuwatch* RILB: #Devin Lloyd# - Claudin Cherrelus  ROLB: #Jaelen Phillips# - Princely Umanmielen LCB: Jaycee Horn - Akayleb Evans RCB: Mike Jackson - *Will Lee III* - Chau Smith-Wade SS: Tre`von Moehrig - Lathan Ransom FS:  Nick Scott - *Zakee Wheatley* - Demani Richardson  SPECIAL TEAMS: K/KO: Ryan Fitzgerald P/H: Sam Martin KR: Trevor Etienne - Jimmy Horn Jr. PR: Trevor Etienne - Jimmy Horn Jr. LS: J.J. • His contract is guaranteed.  Legette is just not where he needs to be mentally.  Not fully invested, it seems.
    • Literally like Hill. He's not QB1 material (now or ever), but if we can turn him into a H-back and use him like  Swiss army knife, that's his ticket to make the roster.  H-back/emergency QB.  I wonder how good his hands are?  If they are at least above average by NFL standards then we can line him up in the backfield, in the slot, split out wide and of course, in the Wildcat.
