All offseason, Panthers coach Ron Rivera and his cast of older, wiser players talked about the importance of forgetting last year.

As they reported to training camp, tight end Greg Olsen even warned of the danger of not focusing week-to-week, and said: “This is too hard to come out and just half-ass and find ourselves 1-4 asking, ‘What’s going on?’

The house always wins. It’s a tired, old adage. Sure you can plonk down your $20 at the table and go on a hot streak, but eventually, if you don’t walk away — the house always gets you back. The Carolina Panthers’ string of luck is over, they hit 17 one too many times. Now the once-dynamic Super Bowl contenders are a husk at the bottom of the NFC South. The worst part: It was easy to see this coming.

The 2015 Super Bowl team got immense credit for playing fast and loose on fourth down, leaning on Cam Newton and his MVP season to pull it all together. The Panthers had no business winning games like they did without depth in the secondary, a makeshift offensive line, and a horrible group of wide receivers -- yet they did. A breakout rookie season from Devin Funchess paired with a bizarrely effective Ted Ginn Jr. gave Newton and the offense just enough weapons to make a go of it — and thanks to a lack of injuries, they did.

Fast forward to now and the Panthers are laughably bad. On Monday night it didn’t help that the team was without left tackle Michael Oher, running back Jonathan Stewart, and Newton, but those are excuses for an endemic problem. Carolina couldn’t beat a 1-3 division rival with a rookie kicker missing two critical field goals despite having a chance to win in the red zone with three minutes left on the clock. Good teams shouldn’t struggle like that, Super Bowl hangover or not.

The easy explanation is complacency. That somehow making it all the way to football’s biggest game left players unprepared, but that isn’t the problem. The real issue is that Carolina took its lauded, gambling style from the field and transferred it into the front office with how the team was built. Every single one of those bets have been a bust.

Ron is a enigma.. just when you think he's got it figured out he goes and proves you wrong and regresses right back to his old terrible self.

The issue is they were complacent thinking they could take the mindset they did to start last season of going week to week and acting like they are on an even playing field with the rest of the league.

The problem with that is the Panthers think they are now 0-0 with the rest of the league and just another team. Other teams look at the Panthers as their SB; their measuring stick; their bench mark. The other teams believe that the Panthers game is the game that will give them purpose and send them to the next level.

I do not believe the Panthers every addressed that with the team. They never created the mindset for that dynamic.

So, the Panthers are playing a playoff mindset every week from other teams, but the Panthers are not doing the same to match or better the other teams passion and intensity. The only game we saw that from the Panthers was against the Broncos.

The Panthers needed to and still need to look at themselves as the king of the hill and that every team wants to take them off that hill week in and week out. How bad do they want to stay on that hill? How much passion do they put into their game to make a statement on each team so that team knows they belong underneath the Panthers?

I believe the Panthers took their competitive advantage and mindset away  in training camp with the week to week crap.

You are all in as a SB team coming into a new season. Take all the risk you can, because that is your only hope and history has proven it. Bury every opponent and let them know who remains on top.

That week to week routine can start back up after you come up short of the SB. It is SB or bust. That should have been the mindset for the season.

The Broncos are not taking it week to week and acting like just another team. They know teams are gunning for them, and they are making it known their mindset is dominate and get another ring.

The Panthers front office and coaches led the players in the wrong direction mentally. Rivera and Gettleman did not put their work in to research how a championship mentality works when carrying over to the next season. The sources are out there, but Rivera clearly has not led his team down that mental road.

The guys who were having parties on the sidelines midway through the fourth quarter of games last year, basking in the glory of the 15-1 year and basically just having a ball (or making asses of themselves if you were on the opposing team) are pretty much the same ones that are 1-4 to start this year.

We probably should have looked at them and realized that there was a good chance those guys were going to be one-hit wonders, but dang, we were all having fun back then. There and all the stuff right up until the Superb Owl kickoff, if you step back and look at it with perspective, showed we weren't acting like we'd been there before, or that we were where we were supposed to be. 

That might lead to some of the younger players thinking they were superstars and the offseason work wasn't as important, or they got to looking for dollar signs rather than studying playbooks. Or you can, and quite rightly, just chalk it up to karma being a bitch with a long memory.

The team won last year because they had been working and building, they were hungry and they had grit. There was no give up last year, from coaches down through the players to the fans. We all seem to be lacking this year.

4-12 or 5-11.  You can feel it in the stadium on game days. This team lost all the swagger, approach and work ethic it had. I'm over Rivera and Gettleman now. This is on them and we need a total change of direction and a coach that is not Mr. Nice guy.

Starts up top and goes down. I hope this is the week they find their swag. The team last year had fun, a little cocky, lots of swag and tons of chemistry. Now it's literally like half the team is in the learning process (coaches included) and everybody is going through the motions.

Yep. I'd say someone in between a Mike Tomlin and a Mike Singletary type.

The coaches aren't solely to blame but it is becoming more apparent they are not motivating the players nor are they game planning well, either before or during the games. The team has looked poorly motivated and prepared each game since SF, that is on the coaches and especially Rivera.

I don't know what's worse.  People being negative during a hot streak.  Or sunshine pumpers during a losing streak.
