Steve Smith and Cam... they bumped heads

I just wish they could have been adults about the whole thing.

Steve's numbers were good under Cam. Rookie/Young QB aside. Cam was a billion times better than Clausen. Maybe if Steve had calmed his tits he would still be here.

That said he is still the GOAT for me

Gettleman was always wrong for the way in which he sent 89 packing. He should have handled that so much better, and treated Smitty with the respect that he was due as arguably the best player in franchise history.

Kind of like they way smith treated Cam with respect? Or Ken Lucas? Give me a break. I love Steve Smith and will always appreicate his time in Carolina, but I'm not losing any sleep over how he was treated. Jerry Richardson very easily could have gave orders on how he wanted this handled and he did nothing. To put it all on Gettleman always has been and always will be a joke.

So, a team that could not handle a personality like Steve Smith expects to be the best in the NFL? That is a pipe dream.

Luckily the defense had enough strong personalities last season in Luke, TD, Norman, Tillman, Harper, and Allen to push this team to victories. It also helped out on offense that the OTs did not have to face any stiff competition with the outside pass rushers.

Cam Newton breaks to easily in the face of adversity. You can tell the strong defensive personalities know this and they will take advantage of it on game day to get Cam off his game. If they do not, and they allow Cam to have time/fun, then he will tear that defense up. This is his major weakness. He needed a vet to toughen him up, and it is clearly missing because Cam was coddled.

This team could be so much better, but they continue to coddle all their young players as though they are too fragile to play this game.

Good luck winning a SB championship with that mentality.

The Broncos and Seahawks continuously beat the Panthers because of they have players with the mentality of Steve Smith. The Chiefs just did the same thing because more than half of their defensive starters have this mentality.

Everyone sees how soft the Panthers are becoming. Some may be in denial, but it is clear to anyone without Panthers blue colored glasses on that this team gets softer every season.

If Steve Smith holds any QB or WR back, then you need to get a new QB or WR until they can handle Steve.

Jerry Rice wouldn't take that crap either. Any WR worth having on the team would hold their QB accountable. WRs must be perfectionists. Maybe this is why the WRs are so inconsistent.

So what we should have done was dump the young, MVP quality quarterback in favor of a mid-30s receiver who was talking about retirement.

Dang, how will we recover from this mistake?

.

Broncos essentially have beaten Carolina because refs have allowed them to simply skirt the rules.   I mean literally every game changing Super Bowl play a flag could of been thrown in Carolina's favor. Plus, Carolina essential had them beat this year despite that.  They just missed the 2nd kick.  Missing or making the kick doesn't change what occurred during the game.

Hawks have lost the last 2 vs Carolina.  The games before that, Carolina hung with them in games even when Carolina clearly had less overall talent.

89 definitely brings something unique.  I think fans miss his entertainment quality more than anything and that gets blurred into all sorts of things.

J-Rich has never ever publicly stepped on the toes of his GMs. He is not that kind of owner.  The train could be coming off the rails, and he wouldn't say a thing. That was a PR gaff of Gettleman's making. He was the one responsible, and there is simply no other way around it.

As for Smitty being imperfect, to put it nicely, he was still arguably the best player in franchise history, and as such he deserved a meeting before being axed.

From the same article, a little insight into George Seifert...

Smith, on getting drafted by the Panthers in 2001:

“So I get drafted, I come in, and a guy taps me on the shoulder. I turned, and George Seifert says, ‘Hey, I drafted you. Don’t f*** this up,’ and walks off. That was it.”

What a guy, eh?
