Commotio cortis

Commotio cordis (Latin, "agitation of the heart") is an often lethal disruption of heart rhythm that occurs as a result of a blow to the area directly over the heart (the precordial region), at a critical time during the cycle of a heart beat causing cardiac arrest.

we might have witnessed the freakiest injury in NFL history last night.

I haven't seen anyone say that's what happened to him. Where did you see that?

Educated guess.

All they said was he was evaluated for a concussion. If he really did suffer cardiac arrest, they wouldn't be able to diagnose that right away. They have to give a reason he's left the game, and "uh maybe a concussion" is an understandable reason.

Fits the symptoms of panic and shortness of breath.

Interesting. I'd take that over a concussion. And yeah, that would scare the poo out of me if I was him

That was my first impression last night, without the Latin diagnosis. A sharp blow to the chest like he took can disrupt the heart rhythm. And he took that helmet shot almost exactly where his heart is. He was gasping for breath and I first thought he'd had the wind knocked out of him, but the look in his eyes was something a lot worse.

The concussion is what everyone is talking about, but I don't think that was what happened. I think Fiz has the right diagnosis.

Scary thing to go through, but hopefully just temporary. I bet there's a helluva bruise there today.

I've heard of this with kids getting hit in the chest with baseballs, etc...

Had it been something cardiac, wouldn't they have been working on him on the field?  They cut away on the broadcast, but wouldn't someone have seen something?  He seemed to be moving around a lot, ie, not unconscious.

Not really.  Being out of rhythm would be tough for anyone without diagnostics to tell.....were it to stop beating you would have known right away.

Might not have been full on, just enough to horrify him.

Regardless i don't think sideline doctors are really set up to defibulate at midfield.

More likely they had no idea what the fug happened at first.

Defibrillate. And yes they can with a device called an AED
