Is it just me, or does Cam Newton never scramble anymore?

I've been saying it a lot this year, but keep getting shouted down. Cam isn't playing this year like he did before. His pocket awareness is way down, he almost never breaks away from first contact and when he does move, he seems sluggish compared to his old self.

There could be some nagging injuries (like the ankle), it could be the after effects of the big hits at the beginning of the season, it could just be fatigue held over from last year. My personal pet theory is that the new baby has been keeping him up nights and its wearing on him. If you've had kids and were involved in taking care of them when they were babies, you can probably remember those days when you were just a zombie from reduced sleep.

Cam hasn't been good as a whole this year, but he has shown sparks of what he was before. Those two long, beautiful passes yesterday were him at his best. I have a feeling next year, we'll see him back to his better form.

Scrambling implies more than just running around in the pocket and avoiding the sack. Scrambling = avoiding pressure and finding the open receiver, i.e. throwing.   Cam is above average at that, but he is not GREAT at it.  Designed run plays do not = scrambling. Like I said, he has never really been great at scrambling. He's a true pocket passer that the coaches use as the primary running back.

He is a good at bootlegs and playction  Idk why we didn't roll him out with OT injury.

Yep he does not scramble as much as he used to but I would like to see him move around the pocket more. For example he had a completion to Olsen after moving to his right to avoid a defender and threw on the run. Also as another poster said when the extra amount of padding he wears he is not as agile and also the pocket always looks like it is going to collapse

I can't be the only one that realized this.  He used to be an exceptional scrambler, and he saved many drives because of his ability to elude pressure and take off for good gains.  I know the OL probably has something to do with it, but it's like he's not even looking to scramble anymore.  I get not wanting him to get hit, but at the same time scrambling is his game.  We should have never drafted him if we didn't plan on him scrambling, he's great at it.  Cam is definitely a very good passer, but I wouldn't say he's elite at it by any means.  To maximize his effectiveness I think he has to scramble

I have said for years that Cam Newton's scrambling is the reason the offense has performed. He has saved countless drives on third down, putting a big ole happy face on the pile of dog doo that is Shula's play calling.

Now that he is not running, how is it looking?

He's essentially Daunte Culpepper

Hard to scramble when the pass-rush collapses the pocket and surrounds you right, left, and front every play.

My god thank you, someone gets it. Theres not a damn thing a qb can do with the pocket collapsing. It's not just eluding pressure, its five guys collapsing on you damn near every play.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
