Yeah. These guys will get the money they want on the open market. Banking on other teams to not be as "frugal" as we are was a pipe dream. Elite players don't simply not play.

Interesting, would you trade him for #12? I assume that  G-MAN doesn't pay $18.2 million for him, and we have been in the wings.

If you think Butler is halfway serviceable I would do this in a heartbeat. Especially with this draft being rich with positions of need. Getting Fournette/Adams then Cook/Hooker IMO would be more beneficial then a 1 year DT loan. Butler would go immediately from a 'luxury' pick to filling a position of need (potentially making that draft pick look a lot better).

But that's the reality in a salary cap era.  It's just not surfaced until now because most teams cave to the players demands out of desperation.  Dave don't play that.   No emotions involved, only business.   I'm not saying the players shouldn't get their money when they can, just don't expect their current team to fork it over.  As long as they get their money who cares where they get it if that's all that matters?

Dave doesn't play that and the Panthers don't play well. Nice little bit of cause and effect.

"but think of that sweet 3rd rounder we'll get!! Oh baby #DaveMagic!!"

From Kawann Short's personal self, this is what he said:

Kawann Short says he would sign a franchise tag most most likely if that happens. Says he and Josh Norman are two different people.

Of course, agents say differently, but still most likely he'd sign it.

Most likely doesn't instill confidence he will.

What are you talking about?  Players and agents have "going to know"n this forever.  Nothing about the Norman situation turned on any light bulbs.  Free agents  were always free to go sign with whoever payed them what they wanted.

He's got to sign it first but I agree.

At his age, I just can't see him sitting out a year and passing up a year of $13-14M guatanteed.

Doesn't mean he won't threaten to do so, just don't see him carrying through with the threat.

Ultimately Dave is going to have to overcompensate to keep Short, or we will lose another Pro Bowler which simply cannot happen. You will destroy this team.

Kawann Short wants to hit free agency, and with what happened last year to Norman, he has every bit of leverage. Dave will have to overcorrect in turn which will in itself establish its own bad precedent while limiting how much the Panthers can improve themselves now.

Dave has put himsef with no good options and he has nothing but his own egotism to blame. Rescinding the tag on Norman may have just been one of the worst executive decisions in the history of this sport.

You either pay Short what he asks or face an outright mutiny. Getting a 3rd rounder in return a year from now is laughable anyways, and not feasible really given how much work we need to put in in FA anyways.

Give him his money and players here will see Dave realizes the mistake he made and hardball him just as much as KK will.

Lose/lose and it is entirely the fault of Dave Gettleman rescinding the tag for literally no reason.

they would need the tag rescinded...like Norman.  Not signing it just means you sit out and don't get paid (and no one does that)

    • Saw this show up in my new feed. Nice to see a couple of our rookies making it into the top 5 so far, even if it is a pff measure... From https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-9-2025 ... 4. TE Mitchell Evans, Carolina Panthers (78.7) Evans struggled in the Panthers’ tight win over the Packers, finishing with a 41.8 PFF overall grade — third worst among tight ends this week. He was not targeted in the game and played only one snap in pass protection. He did log 15 run-blocking snaps, and although he earned a 68.9 PFF run-blocking grade in zone looks (seven snaps), his 39.0 mark in gap schemes (second worst for the week) dragged him down to a 46.6 PFF run-blocking grade overall — sixth worst for the week. Despite seeing zero targets over his past two games, Evans still leads the Carolina tight end group with a 74.3 PFF receiving grade. He has caught all nine of his targets for 90 yards, six first downs and two touchdowns. Evans also leads the Panthers’ tight end group in PFF run-blocking grade (72.2). He has recorded a 20.5% positive play rate across 175 snaps.  5. WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (78.6) McMillan had a better day against the Packers, recording four catches for 46 yards. Most of that production came in the first quarter via two 16-yard catches — one of which he snatched from Carrington Valentine’s hands, who was in perfect position to break up the pass. McMillan accounted for three first downs on the day, although Green Bay was able to limit his impact after the catch, holding him to 0.8 yards after the catch per reception. McMillan now has 41 catches for 558 yards — a top-15 mark. He is also tied for second with 19 explosive gains of 15-plus yards. Three of McMillan’s catches against the Packers came between the numbers, bringing him to 22 for 318 yards and 19 first downs (tied for second most) this season. He owns a 26.1% threat rate and a 76.6 PFF receiving grade between the numbers. He also ranks in the top 10 in explosive gains (10) and yards after the catch per reception (5.5) within that area of the field.
    • At least we don't need to hear overreacting about towels ...
    • Actually there is, try being a Charlotte Hornets fan. I mean the team fuging moved at its peak and hasn't recovered since and that was 25 years ago
