A few good reads on Shula

I'm sure theres plenty more of where that came from. This is just the top 3 google results, with "shula","crow", and "carolinahuddle".

I mentioned it in another thread but I will say it again here. We had more PPG than 5 of 12 playoff teams this year.

Now this is not to say Shula is some offensive genius. I just agree with Rivera, that a change at OC, would not have yielded better results or taken us to the promise land this year. Nor is it worth the risk and hassle of installing a new offensive playbook for Cam and crew to have to learn.

So how do we get better?

The fact is, he knew DC's had him figured out before the season started. Even with that said, when you get to week 8 and you know teams are stopping you because you're calling the same plays as last year, you have to move forward. Idk how to do that, but that's what they pay him for. To figure it out, and he needs to. I know the o line plays a part in that but it can be worked around.

This season's results don't take away what he was able to accomplish last year.

Having said that, it seems like 2015 was more of an outlier than the norm. He deserved credit for 2015, but he also deserves blame for 2016.

Shula performed as well as Rivera and Gettleman performed at their jobs in every year he's been an offensive coordiantor.

Many fans  prefer to have a 1 scapegoat and that they can throw most of the blame on. It's lazy and dumb.

The brunt of the blame belongs to Gettleman and Rivera.

Shula should shoulder some as well the balance is not there amongst the fans.

Look at this way. If JR shitcanned everyone.

Shula could possibly get another OC gig,  Ron and Gettleman would have no chance of finding  their same position with another team

Have I ever trusted Shula completely? No, but it's hard to judge him this season when the O-line kept degrading by the week. Lose the war in the trenches and just about any offensive system will break.

I do believe we need more offensive pieces that provide more flexibility on what we could run. Finding better Uglies would help but frankly, what we need most is a semblance of consistency.

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
