Jabaal Sheard, any interest?

He's the type of guy I could definitely see us bringing in. Young at only 27 and he has 36 sacks over 6 seasons. Had a bit of a down year that might ding his value a bit. Has two 8+ sack seasons in his career.

Not a star, but a guy who might be able to compete for a starting spot and would definitely be an upgrade over Wes Horton if nothing else. Would definitely be a valuable signing if we can't hang onto either CJ or Addison.

I would think he'd be a target, but with Gettleman you never know. If it makes too much sense, it almost seems like Gettleman almost never does what one expects in free agency. And even if Getty does show some interest (like was reported on Jared Cook last year), we'll likely lose out on his services.

I don't see that much special about Sheard. I thought he could be a target, but he's a bit smaller than we like (closer to a 3-4 OLB) and honestly, he's not much of an improvement IMHO. If you are going to spend a decent amount of FA money, I'd rather step it up a bit and get a real improvement like a JPP or Berry (not that either won't be franchised/extended before FA opens). I just don't see anything worthwhile about Sheard. I'd rather spend the extra keeping Short and others. Ealy has 14 sacks in 3 years and Sheard has 36 in 6 years and has started 4 times the games as Ealy. Sheard isn't special.

Perhaps you're right about him not being "special," but in 2016 he was better than Ealy from a production standpoint (and Ealy got 44 more snaps).

I'm not saying we should pay him a great amount of money, and I'm not even sure what his market will really be considering his benching by Belichick, but there may be some value there, especially considering that he'd be returning back to a situation that's mainly 4-3 where he showed good promise when he entered the league. I would bet that he's better in run support also.

I guess that I've always had a leave-no-stone-unturned mentality. I hate seeing players that could have helped us end somewhere else on (what I consider) the cheap.

Nope. Been a bust in Cleveland. NE helped revitalize his career and he managed to screw it back up.

Nick Perry should be a name to mention. I loved him coming out of USC. Been an OLB for GB but no doubt he can't play 43 DE. He's similar to the rich man Olivier Vernon last off season.

Give me both Perry and JPP. SB bound.

Not quite true. It was Cleveland's switch in scheme that arguably slowed his progress more than anything. Furthermore, NE didn't really revitalize his career as much as they tried to exploit that which was already promising. PFF was lauding Sheard as a possible breakout candidate before he set foot on the field in Foxborough. I'll give you the fact that he hasn't lived up to expectations in New England, but a change if scenery and a return to an established 4-3 defense may do wonders for the guy.

Definitely interest, especially if there are free agent losses at DE.  I think cap casualties are more likely than free agents though.  Not sure who is going to get cut loose yet obviously, but as an example, Kareem Martin in Arizona is a possible cap casualty with some physical attributes Gettleman looks for.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
