Rivera: Tag will probably be placed on Short. Fa SHO.

Figured as much. I like it. Let him play the season out under the tag and hopefully at the same time Butler develops into a suitable replacement. Let someone else back up the Brinks truck for a DT who will be knocking at the door of 30 years old at that time.

As soon as Cox signed that deal in Philly I figured signing Short long-term was a pipe dream. Hell, I think Gettleman knew it before then, hence the drafting of Butler.

This just gives Getty reason to draft his DT at 8. And, you know, we really couldn't even be mad at him.

They can still get something done, and perhaps this is but a game being played out, but I'm disappointed. You never know where dragging things out will end up. Will there be a media thing?

I can see both sides hunkering down. Remember G-man's optimism that something would get done...?

well it sucks we can't sign him long term, but if he'll sign the tag, we are set up pretty well to lose him in 2018.  Also, with KK (birthday today) eating biggest chunk of our cap space, we can sign everyone else we want and be a big player in FA.

Getty says he doesn't like to develop players for other teams, but this is 2 in a row.

also,

  1. Rivera added that he wants to improve depth along the O-line. Said he's "pretty optimistic" about working something out with Kawann Short.

Just because you franchise tag a player doesn't mean the extension talks cease. I'm not sure when the deadline to apply the tag is, but it's almost always before teams work out the extension.

Von Miller was franchised last year, until the worked out his extension. So to say there isn't still ''optimism'' is a bit of a reach at this point, March isn't even here.

However I think the Butler pick was made knowing we would have an easier time extending Star since space eaters don't command the money interior pass rushers do. And with Butler we also get the 5th year option down the road if he becomes a rusher on par with Short.

I think for as much flack as we give DG, he's the GM a team like this needs, he has his faults, but he's building a sustainable roster. We just need a break on a tackle in free agency, I feel good about WIlliams, but Oher's long term health is a concern, and I think Remmers returns as depth.

And pick Montravious Adams in the 2nd round and we're golden!  ;)

The only DT worth a top 10 pick is Allen and if he's sitting there at 8 I hope I see DG's fat flopping up and down over his belt as he furiously runs to the podium to submit Allen's name.

(P.S. Yes, I know DG isn't the one actually at the draft submitting the draft card.)

Well, in order to achieve success with your primary runner being the RB, you have to actually have a successful and creative NFL-level passing scheme.

    • Yep - honestly though, I thought his coverage was as good as you could possibly do on a man coverage crossing route with Dak having all day to throw. Dak made a perfect throw and if it wasn't in front of Pickens, it could have easily been picked off. Seemed like we ran more man than I have seen our defense run so far this year. Defense also did a great job of playing their gap/zone responsibilities (even if Dak did pick apart our zone a good chunk of the game) - that screen play on the last drive could easily have gone for a touchdown if Moehrig didn't play his zone and make a great tackle. Biggest complaint about Evero was not blitzing a few more times (especially when Dallas was in the red zone). The few times we did it, Dak didn't look comfortable.
    • There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.
    • People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
